1. Can I post my review, even without having joined previously? I listened to that boot a few days ago.
  2. 1989-10-16 - Melbourne, Australia (7th night)
    -----------------------------------

    The Recording: 3/5

    >> Positive…
    * With all the quality issues, still the audience can be heard very well, especially at the parts where they have to be heard, when they make the songs special!
    * The drums are quite loud and clear which makes it all sound very cool!

    >> Negative…
    * Everyone’s said it through the week…the quality isn’t good, though it’s not 2.5 either in my opinion…I would give it 3 myself. There are many parts where it just goes out of your hands, you’re hearing all this noise and wondering what’s going on!
    * Edge’s guitar sometimes gets even annoying, during Streets, you almost can’t hear the guitar intro and then in the middle parts of the song, the guitar just becomes annoying! The Heartland snippet in the beginning is hardly noticeable because of the quality, if I didn’t know it was Heartland I would’ve thought that it’s just Bono talking nonsense!
    * Small point, but All I Want Is You isn’t recorded right, in the beginning:”…your story to remain untold” and then suddenly a small *bam* and “…you’ll give me, a highway…” 

    The Show: 5/5
Note: I was unable to listen to WOWY and the rest of the show (i.e. till the end of 40). This review is based on the pre-WOWY part. Unless something huge happens in that part, I think the overall review would be quite the same >>
Ow yea, it’s a great show despite the quality. Actually, the recording made me very sad, this show deserves a much better recording. After my ears got used to the quality, I really enjoyed the show itself!

    >> Positive…
    * It’s the Lovetown tour, it was an amazing tour after all! Bono is very much in form and does a great performance in my opinion…the voice is there, and the man himself is very much there!
Some highlights (all the songs are done wonderfully and memorable, but these still stand out):
*All Along A Watchtower, very good performance, it’s also got the Like A Hurricane snippet which goes great with it.
    * Bullet The Blue Sky, Bono says some stuff about the American president talking to him, it does get a bit cheesy, but makes it cool, specially the ending “and I look at the Edge, he looks into my eyes and he says: ”Bono, I can see them fighter planes!”
    * Running To Stand Still has got this guitar in the ending, I believe it’s Bono playing, very nice, the audience are amazing during this song, also near the ending suddenly Larry starts hitting the drums, very cool!
    * The audience is still amazing during ISHFWILF, what’s with the doctor backstage and the fever… is he serious? ‘Cuase that would make this a cool moment. Also, “You’ve got a great country, great city, don’t fuck it up, alright?” …and then…Exodus
    * Angel of Harlem with the B.B. King orchestra…long time since I had listened to this version The audience is again very well heard during When Love Comes To Town :”that was the day before love came to town!!” (note, BB’s guitar becomes annoying during this song, again, quality issues!)

    >> Negative:
If we’re really talking about the show, I didn’t come across anything wrong with it…you could say that some of Bono’s comments sound cheesy and out of place…but not really, surely they matched the situation! 

    Overall:
This is an amazing show, a blow-away, they are well in form, people follow them perfectly and everything seems to go as planned.
But the recording clearly fails the show here, It’s a 3 star recording for a 5+ star show.
If you’re used to bootlegs and are as die-hard a fan as we are here, I think you will enjoy it despite the whole recording quality issues.
The show won’t stay on my iPod (only because of the recording), but it’s not leaving my collection.

    Sound:

Terrible. I've listened to lots of shows; good, bad, averages and fair audiences. But this one is BAD. Although it has good mooments (God Part II, etc), the overall quality is bad. 6/10.

    Pros

The SETLIST!!!. That setlist kicked ass!!!! Incredible. First of all, opened with Hawkmoon!! Moreover, it was a very good version. Second, the middle part is awesome. Desire-Watchtower-Bullet-Running-Streets-IWF-Gloria-ISHFWILF-AIWIY-PGR-AOH... And so on. After that, comes WOWY (amazing version IMO) and... God Part II!!!!! Amazing opsition (16th song), and followed by NYD and Pride!! Also the finishing is great, with Party and 40 (both great renditions).
The audience is great. The overall ambient is very good, and the bad seems to be on a great mood. Also BBKings band is fantastic (as usual, to be sincere).

    Cons

The SOUND. Sometimes the audience sound and the hiss drowns out the band. Other times, the recording itself is so bad that you can barely hear The Edge or so.

    Anything else to add.

    Overall rate
    8/10
  6. 1989-10-16 - Melbourne

    Recording

    - 3 stars absolute max
    - Almost brilliant. It suffers from either the taper being too close to the stage as his mic can't deal with volume. You can hear that static inteference throughout. Or else this is just an old gen tape and age hasn't been nice.
    - I wished I got this in lossless. Lots of bumps and skips and fast forward. No fault of the tapers though.
    - Edge's guitar comes and goes in places.
    - Overall a pretty decent recording

    Performance

    Ups

    - LoveTown was U2 at their peak. They wern't as serious as they were on the JT tour, theres less ego in these shows. It's just a band playing music for the sake of playing music and it's reflected in this show.
    - Setlist is excellent.
    - Hawkmoon is a great opener but it still doesn't beat the album version for me.
    - Like A Hurricane was nice at the end of WatchTower.
    - Bullet was very well executed. Loved the blend of humour intwined with the underlying serious issue of the song.
    - Running To Stand Still. WOW. Absolute highlight of this show and definitely challenging for the best version of this song I have ever heard. How can Bono play 7 nights in the same venue and still pour that emotion into that song. Fantastic.
    - In The Midnight Hour was another great choice of snippet.
    - WOWY had the 'with or withOUT YOU!!!' which gives it a mighty thumbs up from me. Not as good as the version at the first Point show but I love to hear Bono really try.
    - God Part ll as great as ever
    - New Year's Day - 'and maybe the time is right'. Wow he sang that as late as 89? I though that was an 82 thing. Nice
    - 10/10

    Downs

    - Negatives? must be having a laugh. Only negative is that they didn't play Dancing Barefoot which they had soundchecked that very same day.
    - Shows like this make me feel dissapointed with the U2 of the present era.

    Overall

Fucking awesome show and definitely the best we've listened to yet. It's LoveTown so it was always going to be great but what a gem. It's all about Running To Stand Still for me. I've been suffering from a tiny bit of U2 burnout these past few weeks but that one song just relit my fire. It was that good. Definitely a keeper.

    3/5 sound
    9/10 - performance
  7. Welcome to the new round table Sergio, great review!

  8. Haytrain - Fenderman - Jean - U2Starter - Drew .

WTF?? How could I forget it???? You're right, it's one of the best songs of the whole 7 nights, and by far the best version of RTSS of the whole LT Tour.

PS. Thanks Ali I like it
  10. Hey all,

I've got a crazy day today so my thoughts on this Lovetown show won't arrive until late tonight my time....in the meantime, I know some of you are itching to hear what show I've picked, so here it is:

    June 9, 1981 - Lodon, England

I picked this one because it was recorded the day before I was born, and I'm curious to hear how the band sounded when I was an Original of the Species...

Very nice. I don't have it, so I'll download it in a few (when RS allows me to do it!). Good choice I think.
