The album version of WITH OR WITHOUT YOU. There are more than just one guitar track on most of the tunes. He used a Squier Strat and the Brooks Infinite Guitar System for the sustained bits. There might be some of "Blackie" his ol' standby, the all black Stratocaster on some of the parts. LIVE he's used the Squier w/Brooks system, later during the ZOO tours he took to using a Les Paul Custom and an E-Bow for the sustain bits. Popmart saw him using one of two Fernandes Decade Elites with sustainer pickup. [Fernandes is noted for their perfecting the sustainer pickup idea.] For the Elevation tour, The Edge had a Fernandes Native Pro that was customized, adding Hot Rail pickups in the center and bridge, a bew pick guard was cut to accomodate the pickups and it had a Decade model neck. This guitar was destroyed when the studio was flooded back in 2002 when U2 were in N.O. playing the Super Bowl. (N. O. being the place of another famous/infamous flood). For the Vertigo tour, The Edge went to a Fernandes Retro Rocket - all stock, except the black finish was custom - with the sustainer pickup in the neck position.

ONE TREE HILL. In the studio, a few guitars were used. One was a BOND ELECTRAGLIDE. You can see/read more about this guitar on my site: http://u2-atomic-edge-gear.triopod.com

It is an unusual guitar, that Bond. It is what was used for the distorted bits near the end part of ONE TREE HILL in the studio.

LIVE The Edge used a tobacco sunburst Gibson 335, as seen on the Best of 1980-1990 VHS.

TRASH, TRAMPOLINE & THE PARTY GIRL. LIVE, The Edge used his Washburn EA40 Woodstock Festival Acoustic, as seen in the Red Rocks VHS. I am not certain what was used in the studio but it was likely the Washburn EA40 Woodstock Festival Acoustic.

    Hope this helps.

i didn't know that site was yours...it's really amazing.
by the way, are you sure that he used the old natural finish strat on the studio version of "in a little while"?? it sounds just like the les paul he used on live verions to my ears, but i am not that advanced on listening to guitar models.

You seem to know a LOT about Edge's sound. Do you know what kind of effects he uses on live versions of With or Without You, Ultra Violet, Until the End of the World, New York.......?
  3. What did he use on seconds? Its hard to find good vids of that song.

it's just an acoustic. Haven't saw him use it since UF.
  5. He never plays Ibanez -- as I do lol

Do you know what he's doing/using when there are more guitars than one ?

Could you re-word your qustion slightly?
  7. The next album will be flavoured by Fenders Telecasters and Rickenbackers
This was my prediction earlier in the year and i'm still right.
They are going for that eastern sound and no guitars can provide it better.

    Mark my words.

    Telecasters and Rickenbackers.

You're probably right, he's been using the Telecaster a lot more lately. The Rickenbacker was used for Sometimes and Window in the Skies, so it's something he's been using recently. I think he used a Telecaster on Instant Karma. You're right though that if they're gonna go for an Eastern sound he'll need the twang provided by those two guitars. I have a Telecaster Deluxe and a 360, they are fine instruments.

    ^^next try:
I've meant if there are more guitars in the studio-version of a song, how does The Edge 'solve' this problem live on stage?

I don't think the Edge uses overdubs in live shows(though it has been said that Dallas Schoo might do a bit of playing from under the stage). Bono can do a little bit (Kite on Elevation tour etc). Most U2 songs aren't overly complicated in a guitar sense and can be fairly well replicated live with just one guitar.

I can't think of many U2 songs that use 2 guitars. the Studio version of Streets has 2 guitars in it and it's awesome live with just the one. Studio version of One has 2 guitars but Bono has filled in the second gutar on some tours and other times it's just Edge.

Thats just my 2 cents but someone here will shed more light i'm sure
  11. Thanks for the kind words about the site. It is far from perfect and complete but I keep plugging along. It is a labour of love - love of drums and guitars and of U2's music.

ANSWER to THE CHICKEN: "are you sure that he used the old natural finish strat on the studio version of "in a little while"

Yep. That is what The Edge said in the January 2001 Guitar Player magazine article. By the tone, probably using the neck pickup. He also used the Fender Bassman amplifier for the studio recording of "In A Little While".

    Page 106 of said interview:

Guitar Player Magazine: How did you get the lovely clean tones on "Stuck InA Moment" and "In A Little While"?

The Edge: "I have a great 50's Strat, and I plugged straight into the Bassman. On this record (ATYCLB), I found myself simply enjoying the pure tone of the instrument. Again, that's kind of new for me."

  12. Macphistfly -- You might be right about Telecasters and Rickenbackers on the new album. A mate of mine said that Dallas was in a shop in Chicago and had bought a few vintage Rickenbacker SIX string guitars for The Edge. (THe Edge usually using Rickenbacker 12 strings only, not 6's)
