  1. Really important question for next time you see either Edge or Dallas. What happened to the original blackie strat? It was his main guitar for much of the 80s then just disappeared.

    As for the original blackie.... That is TOP on the list. I am 99.999% sure that the Vertigo tour (Streets) all black Strat isn't the original "Blackie". I DO think that the the Vertigo tour (Streets) all black Strat might have been alterred and had at one point been one of the Black and White Strats that Edge has used over the years. (Confirmation/denial from Dallas or Edge is pending on that.)

    I have a handful of questions. Here are a few..


    1) Orig Blackie.
    2) Where's the all black Danvel Nelson (see "Streets from R&H)
    3) What happened to the yellow and the red Clapton Strats (and can I have one!!!!!!)
    4) What vintage is the One Tree Hill ES335. Where is it?
    5) Laundry list of all the drowned items (Edges, Bono, Larry and Adam's) from the 2002 HQ studio flood.
    6) Exact vintage of his White Falcon (see: Pride video). I'm pretty sure it's a 1962 but would be cool to be certain.
    7) There's been TONS of black and black and white Strats... How many of each, what vintages and what modifications.

    8) What is outer space REALLY like AND can I get a ride on your space ship.

  9. Anyone else (I assume its in UK only) got the June issue of 'Guitarist' magazine? It's main article is about the history of Flying Vs and Explorers and of course as it has the Explorer it features Mr The Edge - albeit only a small section. It has him listed as No. 3 in their list of the top 11 Flying V & Explorer players (between Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack) and features a quote he gave about his Explorer which as I having nothing better to do I thought I'd type up

    "The Edge
    Evans' Ex

    When a teenage Edge wandered into a New York guitar shop, he was after a Rickenbacker. Yet it was a natural 1976 Explorer that he left with. "I wasn't expecting it, but the Explorer seemed to talk to me," he told Guitar World; it has since appeared on almost every U2 album.

  11. The current "Streets" guitar is a 73. It originally had a white pic guard, as Strats weren't available in all black at the time. The original "Blackie" was a 79. I think he either got it shortely before, or sometime during the recording of boy.

    I dont suppose you know what year his sunburst Strat is? I have heard 57,62, or 76.

    The all black "Streets" Strat is either a 1973 or a 1971. I've heard Dallas refer to it by both vintages. So I am uncertain. I agree that in either case, it wasn't "all black" to begin with as that the black pickup covers / pickguard / knobs etc wasn't a standard option until 1975.

    The sunburst Strat that Edge has been using is between a 1959-1962. I need to go through my pictures and look at a few more things about it. The amount of screw holes holding the pickguard is telling, as it changed over time. It appears to be an all one piece white pickguard vs. the white/black/white layered pickguard on later models. I will double check my pictures and consult my FENDER STRATOCASTER book. Loads of good information in there.

    Edge DID have a 1970's era sunburst Strat. There are pictures of him in U2 BY U2 the studio with it during the... looks like the Boy recordings. The Edge has mentioned that he had a Strat that he didn't like the sound of... hence the shopping trip to NY on holiday which netted his first Gibson Explorer. But said Strat isn't the sunburst one he's using these days.
