    it's mainly for work and uni stuff, and it has to be a laptop, yes, so that I can work easily at home and in uni

    I did and it doesn't work. I had it going last time, but I've since updated the firmware, but it doesn't want to work this time around.

    Pretty decent laptop there Ali. The Centrino should give you around 2.5 hours battery life (at a guess) and I think it's a 32bit processor, hence the reason for 3072MB RAM (3GB). But you'd think you'd get a Blu-Ray burner at that price.

    Well worth it, even if it is a Sony. 9300MS for the kind of work you're doing is a bit light, but the 3GB RAM should carry it through if nothing else. The Mac laptop has the same sort of config (the high-end one), so I would see it has nothing better to offer (a 9400GS, I think) and a lesser hard drive, and 3 - 4GB RAM is the only real trade-off there.

    The only way to really tell is to go the stores and try some out. That's the best thing.

    Apparently it can have a shared memory of 1.5GB, so I don't think it will be much problem....thanks for the comments

    Shared memory is not a bad thing and 1.5GB is still not a bad figure.
  6. Alright Drew....little update:

    I had the famous flickering screen which ultimately left me with nothing visible on screen but visible with a flashlight. I'm able to use my TV's S-video connection to see the computer, but I was trying to repair it myself. I started with the inverter, but that didn't do anything. When I opened up the LCD screen to change the backlight bulb, I noticed that one of the wires that runs from the bulb into the inverter was completely charred and black. Obviously, I'm assuming this is the culprit behind my problem. I purchased a replacement lamp & wire harness off ebay (bad idea?) and was just testing it before I closed everything up, and was disappointed to see that the new bulb doesn't light up either. I even tried my old inverter and had no luck. Any ideas what to do next?

    My laptop is so old that I'm really just looking to salvage files off of the hard drive, but to complicate matters, I seem to have gotten a virus that won't let me get past the loading of windows. (says something about RUNDLL Error "The specified module could not be found.) I was going to try and boot in safe mode, but I can't see safe mode on my TV with the S-video connection. Doesn't seem to work. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

    It sounds like something else on the motherboard has actually corroded. I couldn't tell you what because I've absolutely no idea - possibly the integrated (if it's a few years old) video has gone. Which is a real pain because I'm not sure how much or even if the dedicated cards are.

    I'm thinking if it's a laptop, it might be worth a shot to get a IDE to USB hard drive connector or a 5400rpm drive bay, if it's important to you, which you can swap out and mount as a second hard drive and backup all your stuff. I have one for the iPod, and they're usually cheap enough - $25 or so, but the bigger stores like Best Buy and those wouldn't sell them. You need a bricks and mortar store.

    If it's a non-Mac system (Linux or Windows installed), you can get one of those drive bays and fit it in like you would a CD or DVD drive. Other than that, a rescue disc would help out in this case. But then the question remains: how deep is the virus or file corruption, in System Restore, the Windows folder etc?

  10. They have a crack for the 2nd Gen now. The night I first installed QuikPWN I was shitting bricks. Crashed the iPod a couple of times. Wasn't helped by the fact I have an issue with putting the iPod into it's special memory mode (DSM or something like that) as the new MacBook has it blocked. So I had to become an App Developer for Apple to get the old download and use that to set it up (then convert back again).

    Once installed though, it's a breeze with Cydia and Winterboard (both on QuickPWN).

    I've cycled through about 4-5 in the last week. This one suits the moment though.
