Its a virtual folder yes. It is a 'library' you can add multiple folders and it will show up as once. Pretty handy.

I have several documents folders on different drives / partitions that i have linked into one folder

That's why it's doing it - it's connected to the older folders, which are connected to that folder and so they all take the same layout. Bingo!!!

I don't know - I don't like the idea of it. It's a good idea in theory but just doesn't work in practice, for me at least.

I don't like how it sounds. Gathering all music files in one big virtual folder? Gosh, that is awful. My Nokia 5220 does that; I don't need my PC to do it.

You'd love Windows 7 then. I guess if your stuff is rockin' the joint then Virtual Folders works well - otherwise if it's in one folder then it really is kinda redundant. I put my music in a certain way. For example:

Joe Perry - Have Guitar Will Travel (2009)
Slingshot - Joe Perry - Have Guitar Will Travel

No, it doesn't work like that. You put it there and it puts the songs all shoved in together - never mind it's not your actual file you're trying to get at. It's Microsoft's virtual crapshitafuckability idea and it just doesn't seem to work for me. What a pain in the arse. You have to do a registry hack if you wanna get it back - I mean, really.

One other thing I think is ridiculous - look at this for user interface improvement:

The rest of W7 is nice but just those two things I find mind-boggling and why they couldn't have been improved before release.

Basically what happens is you go into each VF, set up a list of folders you want to show in that virtual folder (Music, Video, Pictures and any others you want to set up - you can make your own) and then it puts a virtual listing of all gathered files in that folder so you don't have to go hunting over a massive-arse drive or search too hard for them.

Confusing in theory but when you see it and try it you'll understand it....it's awfully confusing to explain.

Do you think it works better if you have loads of folders with the same content type, but not so much for those who have so many files of the same content type, but not loads of folders? I think that's why I don't like it or feel it's needed. Anyway, I'll work on it a bit more later - I gotta head off to bed.

Aham I get it, I get it. Still don't like it. I didn't update to Vista and I won't update to W7 either........ Windows XP will do for me, I don't need new skins if they come with new bugs; I'll stick with my good old blue skins and my good old XP bugs... Thanks for the offer, Mr. Gates.

Aside from the library feature, you dont have to use, Windows 7 is the best thing in years

You should at least try it and see - you might like it or not. It's not for everyone - I thought the Vista way was good so I hacked it to go back like that, so no more complaining on that front. The overstuffed Control Panel - I want that back like XP. Not this ridiculous 'let's shove 43979 icons in a dialog and expect people to work it out'. You bloody well can't.

I have to say, W7 is great apart from that and just like 97% of the tech world says, it's what Vista should have been. No crashes, no delays, no lag, no stupid requirements or GUI confusion (apart from the Control Panel) - just push play it all is. Games I haven't tried yet but haven't had the chance to do graphics drivers yet - I'll get onto those. Do older games from 1998 work yet or are they just as bad as Vista and XP in that regard? I have Theme Hospital and want to play it.

Press start key, enter some letters name of control panel item and hit enter

Use Dosbox for older games, or a virtual machine with Win98.

It has natural English recognition. ''Delete a program''. YES ABOUT TIME!!! Thanks Chris, I'm on it now. No more Control Panel for me. It only looks bad if you select Small View. Shocking but at least it's all out in front of you and that I like, but the tradeoff is a mess unfortunately. Ah well, next time.

I'll try DosBox tomorrow. Thanks for the help and I'll put up a small review sometime of W7 and what I think. It's just so fucking quick.

How do you change your logon background from the flowery sort? I'm not a flower fan...
