That's a good start. Some are complete knobs but others are pretty good on their subject. If you tell them the iPod has failed and that it's just resetting in a loop then they won't run you through (cause you're pretty peeved off anyway and can't be bothered listening to instructions). As a general rule, when I get something new I never bother reading the manuals. Just get straight into it and if it doesn't work the right way only then do I read the manual. I think they've given you a refurbished one - or is it your original?

At most computer and repair shops, what they'll do is get your system set up and going, then they leave it going for 24 hours and not touching it - the right thing to do would be to actually play with it and then say "Oh that's the problem".

I remember someone told me about their new video iPod that the woman said at the Apple Store that it's likely unless all music is purchased from iTunes that you got a virus. Uhhhhh - MP3s can't get viruses. Windows Media files can but not MP3s.
  2. well my empty box will be here in a few days. Heres hoping that it won't take long. The thing i'm most pissed about though is that I had about 10 DVD's saved on the hard-disc that I didn't get a chance to burn. All gone. Dissapeared without a trace

Never rely on an iPod. Put your stuff on and get it off as soon as possible.

  9. Well, I made the mistake of unplugging my iPod last night, and I had to completely restore it! Not an apple problem, just my stupidity and tiredness (I was doing this at 4:00 in the morning). Luckily I had everything backed up. So here's a warning---Always eject your iPod before unplugging the USB

I always unplug it before ejecting. It ejects automatically, so no point doing something extra.

I never ejected it either. But It will always give me a "device removal" message. And I never pay any attention to it.

According to the USB1.1 and 2.0 Specifications, USB is a 'hot-plug' technology (unlike Firewire which apparently can cause your device to corrupt). Which means you can, as long as nothing is copying to or being used from the device (such as saving a file to it or playing a DVD), then it's fine to unplug it without using the 'Device Removal' or 'Safely Remove Hardware' utility. But it does change for different devices such as video-cameras, MP3 players, iPods, singing santas etc.

I do remember when some guy put in the wrong plug to his external drive and boom. Oops.
