1. Since we have discussed many of U2 songs in the past, why not discuss this one? (IF it wasnt discussed already, but I never saw such discussion).

For me, The Fly has been one of the most favourite songs ever. I like everything there: rhythm, guitar, specific vocal style and especially the lyrics ("...all kill their inspiration and sing about their grief over love" , "they say a secret is something you tell one other person", "ambition bites the nails of success", even the chorus "Love.. we shine like a burning star..." - aren't all these are just simply great lines?). I really like the mood of this song.

I dont like much the versions of ZooTV Tour mainly because of one thing: Bono does not sing the last chorus. Actually he did sing it during Zooropa Tour, and thus my favourite Fly from ZooTV would be 1993.08.28 Dublin. I think that without Bono on last chorus this song just loses something...

Elevation versions are cool, but I like best the ones where Edge mutes his guitar during the verses (unlike Boston official DVD). Check out Stockholm versions.

Vertigo tour is also good, but Bono's voice... let's say though the famous Sao Paulo version with that Jean Genie Intro is cool, his voice is just...unimpressive to me.

So I'd like you to comment on this song, and please say your favourite versions, especially from Vertigo!

  2. I really liked Zoo Station and The Fly, particularly in South America. But it just didn't do anything for me much. The one place where the song took off was on Elevation - you have the quiet introduction where Bono sings the beginning, then it goes off into a massive bang.

Cleveland 2001 is the best example of it.
  3. i really think its a perfect song. for me the sao paulo version is the greatest!
  4. For me I really enjoy Boston verison and the visuals of Zoo Tv, but but after youtubing San Paulo OMG awsome.
  5. Never liked it at first, but love it now. Live is better, and I prefer the original ZOO TV performances and the Elevation performances. The intro of the Boston-version is just awesome...
  6. First single by the "new" U2. They lost a lot of fans with it but nevertheless it became their 2nd No.1 in the UK. I like it. My favourite versions are from Zoo TV, I think the song fits perfectly in the whole concept and Bono as the Fly looks really cool. But also the reworked versions from Elevation and Vertigo sound great.

    3 great performances: 1992-03-05 Atlanta; 2001-07-29 Berlin; 2005-04-02 Anaheim
  7. Album version does nothing for me, I couldn't find a relation to it... but live I like it very much, both Zoo TV(raw Bono's vocals) and Vertigo. I hate Elevation versions, I think that they destroyed it with that slow intro, boring versions...

My favs are 1992-10-14 Houston and Sao Paolo
  8. the rewoerked lyrics in The Lounge Fly mix are great. I wished they'd incorporate a few lines into live performances.
  9. love the Saitama version where it starts off the encore. Really powerfull cant wait for the 3d film. It sounds awesome on both trailers
  10. Love this song and forever grateful that it knocked Bryan Adams off No. 1 here!

ZooTV (later) favourite but Elevation was great and Vertigo was a good modern version of the ZooTV era

The guitar solo rocks and especially on the Lounge Mix. Like Gerard I'd like to see a little of this surface someday.
  11. what I like most about the song is the lyrics.
each verse is strong enogh to stand by itself ["its no secret that a liar won't believe anyone else"]
and how they fit perfectly with the melody

    = master pice
