I like the Clapton Strat, as mentioned,

but I thought the Vertigo versions with the Variax

were better than the Elevation versions with the Les Paul. (Variax is an interesting and versatile guitar - I love it!)

Although, that said, it wasn't the guitar so much as it could have been the effects settings used on the Vertigo tour. It just seemed that he got a more 'gritty' distortion tone on the Vertigo tour than on the Elevation tour.

    "...it's no secret at all..."
  2. I think the Zoo TV and Vertigo 'Flys' are pretty similar to eachother, but the Elevation version sounds like a completely different song. Yes, there are parts which are the same but the tones are much higher...

Well, it was in a different key during Elevation but yeah, there's a much different feel. THAT said, each version of the Fly from Elevation sounds different, I mean compare the Cleveland version to Boston 09/06/2001, and there's a very different feel...

yeah, but that makes Elevation tour so special. And I think the Boston versionwas certainly the best,.

  5. Here we go...to sum up, it's (as said by Bono) a phone call from hell, from The Fly, he's in hell and he's called us from a phone booth in there...as he's in hell, he's lived his life and is now in the other world, he knows all the secrets, all that's true and real, and he's trying to pass on his knowledge to us...so, that's what he's talking about, revealing some heavy truth (every artist is a canibal, every poet is a thief, a friend is someone who lets you help, etc. )
and in the end, he is running out of change for the phone, so he says:

Look, yeah, I gotta go, yeah I'm running outta change
There's a lot of things, if I could I'd rearrange

There are a lot of things he knows now that he didn't know when he was alive, so he wishes to be alive again and live his life the right way and end up in heaven, if he could, he would rearrange.
  6. I agree with you! . I love all the lyric, especially when Bono sings " every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief, all kill their inspiration and sing abou their grief", amazing.

At Zoo Tv era, all the mesaages in the tv´s screen are unbelieve, and in the Vertigo Tour, the sentences like "The Secret is yourself/pain" are my favorites

    My favorite live versions are

    1992-06-11 - Stockholm, Sweden
    1992-08-16 - Washington DC
    1992-10-14 - Houston, Texas - Zoo Radio
    1993-08-28 - Dublin
    2005-06-27 - Dublin, Croke Park
    2006-02-15 - Mexico City
    2006-02-10 - Brazil
    2006-12-09 - Honolulu

    My english isn´t very good
  7. So, best snippet for this song? I'd go for Bowie's The Jean Genie, Sao Paulo 2006 gives me chills every time

  8. There aren't many to choose from, but I do love Lust For Life from the Boston 09-06-2001 version aswell as the time Bono sang the opening verse of Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car...
  9. The Fly itself worked well as a snippet during Discotheque on Popmart.

  10. Want to DL on of those shows as soon as possible, been wanting to see how that worked - I have a decent idea, but nothing like listening to the real thing for oneself.

Certainly worth a listen. He basically just raps out the first verse.
