  2. U2 are the only rock band that matters now. They can't quit. The Rolling Stones are way too old, as are the Who. Pink Floyd appeals to certain folks, and the Beatles aren't around. Don't be counting on Led Zeppelin either. All that's left are U2. Quitting with this tour means passing the reins to another band. Who do you pass it to? Coldplay? Maybe.

    The Who quit in 1983....only to come back and tour again later. The Rolling Stones nearly broke up after 1983 because a rift between Mick and Keith. So in a sense had the Stones stopped....the reins would have fell to none other than U2. U2 would have taken the reins, but created TUF, with hits Pride, Bad, and ASOH.

    So, if U2 want to quit, they can pass the reins onto say, Coldplay. They've got 4 albums out, each one widely respected.* Viva has controversey, because it alienated some fans wondering what did they do? This is the same instance happened with U2 fans when Achtung came out. I'm not saying Coldplay are copying U2, but Coldplay could be the next big band.

    But in my case, U2 has this album, then their last one. Just remember the words from Roger Daltrey, lived out by Keith Moon, "I hope I die before I get old". In other words, to U2, don't let your act grow old.

  5. I think it really depends on the sound of this new album and the theme of the new tour. They've always seemed to be so self-aware that they can recognize the limits that come with their age. If they carve out a niche for themselves with their new music that's appropriate for 50-year-olds to perform---and can still remain relevant, then I doubt this will be their last album. Staying relevant without looking completely and un-self-consciously ridiculous is one of the main reasons why they're still around. They've based their success off of that.

    Plus, their 12-year Live Nation deal gives us til 2020, when they're approaching 60 years old. If that's going to be the timeline, then we've got, what, another 2, maybe 3 more studio albums after this upcoming one? Probably a couple more Best Ofs in there too, and you've still got a great U2 machine running there.
  6. Can we please get off this terrible subject? I come on here and I see this thread is active, so I come here looking for good news and I see people talking about the end still! Stop talking about it now! We know they're getting old and all, but it's not exactly a positive subject if you know what I mean. U2 are timeless, they always will be. There's no need to talk about them quitting, I don't see it happening in the next couple years. They still love playing more than anything.


    BTW. Coldplay would not take the reins. There is no one to take them right now. If U2 quit, the great music of classic rock and music that matters will die with them. Music has barely any relevance in it today, (new music I mean) compared to old music. Which is while I listen to old bands and classic rock.

    So stop talkin bout it!

  10. I think we have about 10 more years of U2 as the band we know it as today. After that they may perhaps still work with music(especially the edge), and bono would still work with all his projects. Maybe some best ofs albums with an extra new song or two. Maybe ?

    10 more U2-years would be great man....
