Have any comparable bands done something similar?

Otherwise those who expect the new album to be something of a second renaissance for U2 are going to be dissapointed. I think that rather than placing high hopes on the new album, we should instead expect more of the same (ie their recent work) and be pleasantly suprised when it comes out.

I really think that U2 are unique for a major act. They put out their first album almost 30 years ago, and they still are putting out consistantly good albums. Look at the major acts of the sixties and seventies. They put out crappy studio albums just as an excuse to tour and play the hits. They usually have a rotating cast of characters, are seriously augmented by other musicians, and are watered down versions of their glory days. The phrase "we'd like to do a song off our new album," usually sends people running to the bathroom.

U2 on the other hand has the same lineup, and hearing the new songs is actually a highlight of a U2 show. I really appreciated these facts after seeing U23D and The Stones in Shine a Light. For guys pushing 50 not to be a nostalgia act is a rare feat. Thanks for letting me rant!

this is the insert - removed because its too sickening to watch

it defines what the topic is all about...... the worst thing someone could do to U2. I'd rather hear the Mary J Blige version of One, and thats bad!
  4. U2: covers of the psychedlc Beatles songs feat Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr
  5. 12 covers of Rick Astley's "Never gonna give you up" in various different styles.

    *cringes*
  6. Bono's duet with Britney Spears

Mr. The Edge as a leading rapper in a duet with 50 Cent (has a bit of experience from Numb, doesn't he?)
