    Oh, yes it did. Screaming and straining like that will damage your voice whether you smoke or not.


  12. That's true if he howled like that on every U2 song back then, but he didn't. Bono strained his voice on only a few songs. The smoking/throat cancer thing had way more impact, and I believe he said as much at some point in the early 2000s to explain his vocal issues.
