Larry has used Paiste for a number of years and they are great cymbals. That said, Sabian and Zildjian also make some great sounding cymbals.

In the video of LMJ playing "...Boots...", he appears to be playing Zildjian "A Custom" cymbals. A Custom line, like the Paiste Signature line that LMJ has used since Achtung Baby, a a bright cymbal.

LMJ used Paiste for the "We Are One" show in DC. Chances are that is what he will tour with. We'll probably know more come Sunday, as U2 will be on the Grammy Awards.

  2. Finally got it! It's now sitting in pride of place on my stand. Such a great tone, so much better than my beloved Les Paul. Happy days! Uploading pics and clips in a bit, just got to sort it all out. YAY!
  3. I remember when I got mine... plugged it in for the first time... just the Explorer into a Vox amp... 'Instant Edge' (tm)

    Good times.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures and hearing some clips.

    Rock on!
  4. When the notices of the Icons of Music 2008 auction went up, it was said that the sparkle blue 1981 Les Paul Standard was used for tracks on the new album.

    1) I wonder what track(s) it might be on.
    2) Does he have another new fun guitar that we don't know about that he would use in it's place live?

Although it's possible that he'd use the remaining cream Les Paul Custom or the 30th Anniversary Les Paul Goldtop... time will tell, I suppose.

  5. I wonder if this was used for GOYB. A lot of people say it sounds like a tele, which I agree with, but in the video he has his LP. If you think about it, Edge has usually had the guitar he used for the song in the video, so it's hard to say.

Well, you say that, think of Discotheque and The Fly, not to mention Desire - the guitars used in the video haven't necessarily always been used live subsequently. Also Vertigo, now I think of it. The first thing I always think of when I listen to GOYB is Discotheque, so I'm wondering whether he used one of the Fernandes? Obviously technology is as such now that you can pull off pretty much everything and anything but when I've been messing around trying to replicate the sound, I get the best tone from my Strat. copy - singles plus a certain drive simulation available on my FX pedal.

Anywho, here's a couple of pics of the old/new Explorer in all its glory!

(couldn't resist throwing one like this in lol...)

    As for sounds clips...

(http://www.mediafire.com/?zemcnkezc1t - I put this one here in case the eSnips link fucks up, 'cause I don't seem to have a lot of luck but I keep trying in the hpoe that it might come up trumps one day...)

This was based on a demo my friend came up for his band ages ago that he got me in on, just to get away from the traditional thing where I post a cover or something I came up with the riffy parts, but the intro. bit keeps making me think of Abba's "Gimme Gimme Gimme" lol...probably same chords or something? Anywho. The recording quality doesn't really do it justice, but take it from me that it has so much smoother and cleaner a tone than my LP, yet still packs the same punch. I love it. £255 well spent methinks.
  7. Dude, that was awesome!!! I'm happy that you finally got your Explorer man! It looks like a lot of fun!
  8. Good that you finally have gotten your Explorer. Congrats. The best instrument is usually the one that we love to play most.

  9. Off the HOOK!!! Nice axe my man. I like how it's the darker natural, not the really mustardy explorers you see sometimes. I've seen that one in the store before as well, and I came very close to buying it too! I remember it being a great guitar, and I'm sure yours is too. Have fun man!
  10. So, anyone get to check out the samples from the Walmart link? Magnificent is in F#m from the sounds of it, i.e. the chords to the riff section sound like F#m, C#m, A, E, but that was just trying to play along so I could be wrong, but it sounded like that. NLOTH sounds like it's in E...

On the subject of guitars...anyone got any opinions on Yamaha stuff? I'm thinking of investing in a Pacifica, but ideally I'm looking for something with 3 singles, and I know the new Pacifica range have humbuckers in the bridge position. I'm intrigued as to whether something like Streets or AIWIY would work in phase between a bridge humbucker > middle single lol.
  11. There's a simple wiring shortcut for SSH and HSH strats that splits the bridge humbucker in switch pos.2 (br-mid) but not in pos.1 (br). With that little trick you can get quacky sounds from pos.2 as expected from a strat - almost as good as the real thing. Plus you have the full humbucker on pos.1, delivering some serious rock power. Of course this only works if the humbucker has split option (i.e. 4 wires).

  12. So, Edge used a cream Telecaster (maybe the 1966-blonde finish that he used for Vertigo? I don't know) for the first performance of Get On Your Boots. Pretty cool if I might say that, I was expecting a Les Paul but a Tele did a fantastic job

That echo (wah-wah?) on the small solo at 01:40 makes me SHIVER
