Don't really know what do you think... if you're thinking about the Brothers' version of Winter that is the same as Mercy now.

That's the one I'm referring to. They took something that actually for the first time I'd loved a U2 song in god knows how many years - maybe since Zooropa - and turned it into some short four minute thing that no longer even sounded half decent. It sounded mainstreamed and I hate that. Cool to see a different take but it's not cool to do it to a song that didn't really need it.

Case in point - see the Please single version. A brilliant song turned into something even better. Sometimes leaving things as they are works wonders. With U2 they try to improve it and end up making it sound absolutely pathetic.

    God, how I love that!

But anyway, I hope they'll read internet forums (and not just on U2.com) after the tour and try to do something with these songs (especially Mercy) to get them listenable.
  4. I feel like the "new" version of Mercy is great. I was excited to hear it. I don't think I like it as much as the old version, but I've been listening to that one for over a year now and am used to it.

With regards to Winter, I love both versions, and the one used in Brothers is perfect for the film.

Do you guys think maybe they'll break Winter out this tour?
  5. Although I'm not a big fan of the studio version of Mercy, I'm really starting to like the version from Zurich last night. Listened to it 2 or 3 times already today

    +1

The first Winter was way way way better, the new one sucks ass.

The first Mercy had a way better chorus, the new one, the whole "because because..." bit sounds too forced to me. I don't like the tempo change mid-song, normally I do (regarding song structures in general) but not for Mercy, it's a love song, a ballad, and I don't like the 3 second acceleration. Plus the lyrics aren't as good. I'm hoping they try it again live with the old chorus, but chances are that's not going to happen.
  7. Let's hope they won't start playing winter, I dislike the song immensly. In both versions.

And I prefer the studio lyrics of Mercy, the new lyrics are way too cheesy.
  8. really like the live version. let's see how it develops
  9. the new corus is catchier. I like it. Now I can play it in my head whenever I want. The lyrics of the studio version were forgettable.
  10. So of course something as major as a live performance of U2 fandom's 'unicorn', Mercy, happens when I'm running around busy with other things. I've only just listened to it a minute ago, and I have to say I like this version so much better than the one that's been floating around for however many years. Lyrically, it's still far from the best thing they've ever done, but at least now it's a cool little song that's actually enjoyable to listen to.

And I'm pretty impressed they've brought it out and played it.
  11. I was reading the last pages when a question came to my mind: Does U2 is making music because they like or they started making music thinking about the future "success" the song will be able to do? Thinking this because I could notice something similar between the new version of Mercy, North Star and Glasto. I'm not 100% sure what it is, but I think that're trying to do "catchy" songs instead of trying to do great songs that would become "catchy" in a natural way, just like the "old Mercy".
