1. If you're all talking about 128 kbps WMAs, then how the hell do I have a 217 kbps VBR mp3 of Mercy? I don't even know where I got it from. Granted, it doesn't sound all that much better than a 128 kbps mp3 would, but still...I don't understand.
  2. In the recent posts they've been comparing the live version of Mercy to the original. I dunno if I have the 217kbps version though

Because some not very bright (or deceptive) persons have decided to transcode the 128kbps WMA into higher bitrate formats - not realising that this will not increase sound quality as it is limited by the quality of the source file. You cannot magically retrive information (in this case sound quality) that did not exist in the original file.

It's like if you have a crappy youtube quality video that you reencode to 1080p and then play on your HDTV, it'll still look just as bad as the original video (but the file size will be much larger).

The thing with Mercy is, although not quite lyrically spectacular by any means, it has parts to the song which fit together beautifully. A lot of the lyrics actually, in my opinion, are similar to that of Beautiful Day/UETEOTW. They aren't complex, like some of their previous stuff, but it certainly have the potential into becoming a hit song like Beautiful Day.

Which reminds me, the start of any U2 song is quite important - the build up to the chorus. In all hit songs, like WOWY, ISHFWILF, BD, etc, all build up to the chorus, with a descriptive opening, it's almost like the recipe for a great U2 song. With this live version, it seems like they have gone against that, and stripped it down into something far too simple - which I believe, doesn't leave much left to work with.

    Love that post!

P.S. I hope Mercy survives the trip across the Atlantic and the Pacific!
  5. intresting to see everyone likes the old one better.
I honestly think the new version is much more fun. Then I know nothing about music such as building up to the choruses and stuff. Its just much happier/positive song now. I that.
What kinda pisses me off is that the Edge doesnt look too happy while performing it...

Maybe he's pissed off too because he sees that Mercy became a kind of mainstream frightful thing. I wouldn't be happy either. But that's just my opinion.
  7. Works great live. I hope Bono changes the lyrics somewhat. The start is perfect, the refrain just bollocks. Some changed lyrics, some tweaking here and there and it's ready to be released.

I'm trying to understand why they would change it to "because, because, because, blah blah" but I just can't. It was perfect the way it was IMO. It didn't need any improvement or tweaking.
  9. I actually like the "because, because, because we can, we MUST." - part.
it's a more lively song now! (and a very nice live-song, as I discovered in Brussels yesterday).

Then again..... this song, being a leftover from the HTDAAB sessions, has no place on a "new album" an EP maybe, but not on a NEW album.

    EDIT: don't shoot!

You weren't there. BelgianBono was. No comparison. If he thinks it worked better live then it did. For him. You've really got to stop telling people their opinion is wrong.

It's more happy? "You wanna kill me and I wanna die"? Seems pretty happy to me! I don't even understand where that lyric came from.
  12. Its a different song. Only the title remained the same. You can barely compare them regardless of the quality of either of them.
