Yeah I know quite a few girls who didn't like/watch the movie because it is so dark. And my sister was terrified of the Joker, was covering her face in some scenes.
I think it's partly due to the fact that Heath is dead, so its quite macabre seeing him play such a demonic character, they probably think he's going to haunt them in their sleep or something.
But honestly, I thought he was really really funny, I don't know what that says about my sense of humor
