1. Did that guy said we're facists...?
His double H probably stands for Heil Hitler i guess...

    - Pop was criticized by "old fans" for sounding different than either Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby.

So what? Has the band's audience grown or shrunk? For every "old fan" that left a "young fan" stepped in gladly. Considering the loss by music piracy the new albums sell as well as the old ones did. Their tours cash in even more. So they must have done something right. And even if the PopMart tour wasn't so well received in the US - the Elevation and Vertigo tours were very successful.

Today "old fans" stand up and criticize NLOTH for sounding different than either War, ATYCLB and HTDAAB. How do you think the story will continue?

Basically - you can't please everybody no matter how much you try

Something tells me such comments would probably be best left unsaid lol...
  3. Well, it's not that U2 don't try to please somebody. It's not that they decide to go the safe way a lot of times instead of taking a risk.

But to come back to the opening topic, I think some of their single choices have been quite strange indeed. Some "first singles" didn't quite represent the according album, and some have indeed been some risky choices. Sometimes the risk did pay off, and sometimes it didn't.

    - Desire was different than every other song on R&H - and very different than the Joshua Tree.
    - The Fly was radically different than everything U2 did before, a real shocker.
    - Numb was a weird choice for a first single, and the "video single" format was even weirder.
    - Discotheque was immediately catchy but a much happier song than the rest of Pop.
    - Vertigo was the straightest riff rocker U2 ever did - the rest of the album was much more mid- tempo.
    - GOYB is different than everything else on NLOTH, it sounds like a Discotheque / Vertigo mash- up. The marketing strategy first as album preview download track, then as CD- single was strange, too.

So probably "I'll go crazy tonight" would have been a more obvious choice for a first single, but they decided against it. We'll see if that has any effect on album sales. Personally speaking, I doubt it. U2 seem to have been using their first single mostly to draw attention to the according album, not to score a world single hit. And GOYB definitely draws some attention to itself, so a lot of listeners will give the album a chance.

  4. 'Pride' was the best 'first single' that U2 ever released. Since then, it's been a varied lot. The past two span the range: 'Vertigo' was quite good while 'Boots' wasn't.

I would have liked 'Magnificent' to be the kick-off single, but I'm just an armchair quarterback. The band & its management are sharp as they come; even though I don't really like 'Boots,' I'll defer to U2's judgment in making the choice they did.

Happily, the other ten songs on the album all eclipse 'Boots.'
  5. What a topic...

Bye u2 and go do your Good Morning America concert and prove that you are the sellouts that all "real" u2 fans have said you have become. You continually ruin the reputation you had. I for one, don't consider U2 a great band anymore and by the looks of the sales and concerts for the last 10 years , most people agree.

I heard they are trying to play stadiums again in the USA. That will be another big embarassment like it was for popmart. They will have half empty stadiums like they did for Popmart. And then Bono's big ego will be cut down like it was after the Popmart debacle.

IM SICK OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU! I just would love to hear what bands you love so much..Go post at a site where people hate U2. Everyone here is happy and loving this site. We dont need people like you insulting us and U2. Everyone is entitled to their own OPINION but you speak as if its fact.

FACT: U2 HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR 30 YEARS WITH THE SAME 4 MEMBERS AND WILL CONTINUE TO SELL RECORDS, GET GLOWING REVIEWS AND SELL OUT ARENAS/STADIUMS EVERY TOUR UNTIL THEY CANT WALK ANYMORE. MOST BANDS CANT GET PAST THEIR 4th or 5th album.......Beat it

Nevertheless, i guess you're right GOYB isn't a good song...

But if you listen to the album, you must notice that there aren't a lot SINGLES on the album
(so kinda popular, singable, energetic songs)
    Except GOYB and Crazy Tonight...

I think they just had to put this on the album to HAVE singles...

    To proove i'm right :
Everyone thinks Moment Of Surrender is one of the best U2-songs
But you just CAN'T make a 7-minute single,
Then they would be complete fools

STAND UP COMEDY SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE FIRST SINGLE.

HEY DOES ANYONE HAVE BONO SINGING GOLDENEYE.
OR THE WANDERER NOT JOHNNY CASH

  9. can everyone please turn off caps lock?
