1. So I get bored tonight and start looking for other U2 forums besides U2start and I come across U2Station.com. Out of pure curiosity, I decided to look in the NLOTH topics and see this really detailed, somewhat humorous and quite insightful fan review on the new album. ((You can find it here http://www.u2station.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4792))

    Then I got to thinking...

Ok, so NLOTH wasn't everything I was expecting but is the album really THAT horrible? I feel as if I'm the only one that was satisfied with the album. Then again, am I only looking at the bad reviews? I mean, I know that there are fans out there who love this album just as much as I do, but is NLOTH REALLY that terrible? Was HTDAAB REALLY that terrible? Was ATYCLB REALLY THAT TERRIBLE? Am I just not picky?

To me, I'm not expecting every album U2 puts out to sound like the Joshua Tree. Nothing could every compare to JT. But this is the thing: do other fans want every album to be better than Joshua? If U2 kept writing the same riffs, the same type of lyrics, the same drum beats and bass lines then U2 would be...well, boring. The best thing about U2, to me anyways, is that I can put in every single album by them and each one will sound different in it's own way. I don't want to listen to five, six, seven CD's and hear the same shit every time. I need something new, something fresh. I want to hear the band's new ideas and new thoughts.

The bottom line is, no matter what Bono sings about, it's always personal and it's always deep. That, to me, is great music. A song doesn't always have to be "catchy" or 100% perfect. Imperfection makes a song. Bono has kept me wondering and entertained with every lyric he writes. The band has not disappointed me whatsoever--they leave me wanting more. And NLOTH did just that.

Am I just thinking in silence or does anyone agree with me?
  2. I completly agree with you. So many people want U2 to make AB or JT again, and if they did that then it would defeat the purpose of making the music in the first place, if they did that they would just be the Rolling Stones. I say screw the reviews, if it turns you on, its great.
  3. I agree. It does move me and in many ways. Thank you very much. And I know that other people's opinions doesn't matter but it's just one of those things that has been sticking in the back of my mind lately. But you're right. Different strokes for different folks.
  4. I think NLOTH is awsome myself

    Amen

I think one of the main problems that have some fans with ATYCLB and HTDAAB is that U2 weren't that "shocking" anymore but well, "laid back", knowing how to use their craft, being pleased with the outcome and don't giving a shit about people who want the AB - Pop ambitions.
And now with NLOTH, imho, they did both: offering something fresh and new while also having an eye on the last 2 album's sounds and production.

Maye after such a long wait (...) many fans just wanted something that would completely blow them away or leave them with their jar dropped, which just happened partly, and even worse for those fans: maybe not in a way they liked. See the very mixed views for GOYB eg.

Anyhow, I love the 00s' albums. My subjective view and that's it.
  6. Katja said it all for me.
  7. General discussion thread? Oh man, I'm picky..lol
  8. NLOTH is among their best
    ATYCLB is among their best
    HTDAAB is among their best
    It's not hard
  9. Did yeah write that review you posted?

  10. NLOTH is among their best, and ATYCLB is in certain ways too... but HTDAAB is just one of their least.

Actually I don't know how to rate NLOTH yet. I like it a lot, but it does not sound like a masterpiece to me, honestly. I think NLOTH features songs that are typical for U2. A song like GOYB, which refers to POP, a song like Being Born, which is just a evolution of Zooropa.

But also songs like Moment Of Surrender and Unknown Caller, these are more Achtung Baby'ish and Joshua Tree'ish, and Magnificent is somewhere inbetween Unforgettable Fire and Pop.

Crazy and Stand Up are songs like they made on ATYCLB and HTDAAB, So this might be their most complete record, but it's also a confusing record because it does not have one kind of sound or thougt kinda thing like Zooropa and Achtung Baby have (or Pop and Joshua Tree). Even ATYCLB is a more same sounding record.

So this is not their most 'U2 reinventing record' for me, but it's good and it's not mainstream or whatever at all, otherwise it would be on top of the charts. But I do think it's their most complete record, I mean, for me U2 is always searching for something and they quite found it on this album, nameley that U2 does have different sounds.

Although I really hope the next album will be like Zooropa or Pop. Just because a more experimental U2 is so much more interesting.

However us obssessive fans feel about the new album, U2 may need to brace themselves for the realisation that this could very well be the least popular (at least to the general public) album since October. That is if the tour doesn't ignite interest in the band again and sales don't pick up.

What was that oath from Bono years ago? "We'll quite after two bad albums." How would he measure that?

But I like to look on the bright side - this tour will blow people's minds, I'm sure.

  12. This isn't a bad album It's a very good one. HTDAAB wasn't a bad one too concerning the sales and the tour.
