1. I think people are hating on it because it has a little of everything.

No line - reminds me of lady with the spinning head and it has a very achtung baby feel.
Magnificent - classic u2 that has to be on every album (walk on and city of blinding lights new brother)
Moment of Surrender - the POP classic
    Unknown Caller - zooropa-esque
3 in the middle are reminiscent of ATYCLB and HTDAAB
fez / being born - zooropa part 2
white as snow - something off october / tomorrow
Breathe - some sort of happy pill of a song
Cedars - if you wear that velvet dress character goes to war. wake up dead man good.

The songs are not really "a new direction" but the best bits of the past. It might be there best because it is the best balanced.
  2. The thing is with U2, their albums are only going to be described as great or awful by reviewers and casual listeners, theres no inbetween with this band. Only the fans can give an honest account. I can say that this album is a very good one. I find it more complete than the previous two. Its very well structured and has a bit of everything. Certainly not a classic by any means but a very good one.

wow. you are absolutely right! You just described everything about these songs that I have been trying to spit out since i first heard the album. It is very "OLD" U2 in a "NEW" form. But isn't that a good thing? Most U2 fans wanted their old sound back and U2 actually listened to their fans request. Hm...I don't know. I'm happy with it so I guess that's all that matters right? lol!
  4. The problem with NLOTH is that post 2000s U2 (and Bono especially) overdo some of their songs which pushes their material into cringeworthy territory and just makes them less relevant as it exposes their age.

A good example of this is the lack of restraint (and some would say taste) that spoils songs like GOYB and Stand Up Comedy.

Their last two albums also exhibit this annoying tendency to overcook things. If it had just a little more restraint i'm sure NLOTH and GOYB would have been much better received.
  5. Why is an album just good or a masterpiece when it sells millions of copies? Why is that the main criterium?
I think the 'classicness' of an album is defined by the quality of the songs, in my opinion this could be best measured by the way the songs are performed live. So, after the coming tour, NLOTH can be really measured a succes or not.
