the white stripes' latest album was recorded in 3 days, and it was pretty damn good too

me and my dad were at best buy the other day and they had a whole section of shelves filled with hundreds of copies of chinese democracy, it was th saddest/funniest thing i've ever seen

The difference was though I had four or six versions of the songs from ChiDem and liked them (particularly Shackler's Revenge) so the final album I knew what it would sound like anyway and each time it became better and better. SR had extra beginning drum beats, no echo on one lyric and less beats on the end, so what the song was like in 1999 was what it came out in 2008. I think the only song we didn't know coming on it was If The World, Prostitute, This I Love, Scraped and I think that was all.

Anyway, I'd buy another copy because I like it so much. It was sad but then the fans knew it would happen - remember, in many people's eyes Axl is a failure and Slash is Guns even though he wasn't part of the original and better lineup - Izzy was much better. It should be like Joe Perry's new album Have Guitar Will Travel - 47 days, recorded at his home studio and great blues and hard rock tracks - as long as the audio quality isn't the same.

Great album, no disagreeing with that, nor would I wish to suggest that, but I still think it could have been even better had they given themselves more time to work on it. Just the reverse to the argument about spending too much time, I'd suggest.

Pop could use a littlemore time sure, then it could be their best album ever and it would still have been written in 2-3 years... since they started pop in 95 with only one or two started tracks (as i know)..

Good point - but another word:

    Zooropa

They did that album quickly as well. Probably quicker than Pop. The difference is that they over-hyped and oversold Pop and (though I personally love Pop...a lot), it looked like a big bluff and the album "flopped."

Now Zooropa on the other hand was not over-hyped. For those that remember when it came out, it just slid out there during the Zoo TV tour...almost as a little surprise. And while it may not be as critically acclaimed as Achtung Baby, no one ever called it a flop.

What it comes down to is that U2 have a bad habit of over hyping their records. Every single album since and including POP they make sure everyone hears them say "it's the best we've ever done." I especially remember them saying that for HTDAAB. No way on that one.

Anyway, this is all to say they should pull a Zooropa, release something they love, something interesting, without all the "if it aint the best we're quitting forever" stuff.

Yeah good luck getting them to do that now. Bottom line is everyone, they went commercial. They make music for the masses, not for themselves, they make it to remain on top, not because it inspires them (although it does inspire them a bit). Zooropa was made because they were so enthralled with the ZooTV feel, they thought they could explore it even more. I don't even think NLOTH or 360 tour has a feel, other than "gigantic unnecessary spaceship". They could have built on the whole space theme a lot more, and if that was the case, then i'd be really excited for a follow up to that, as zooropa was to the zootv theme. We're never going to get an album like we got in U2's glory days, so I'm not too excited. Perhaps when we actually start hearing official things about it I will, but not now.

  6. Ok, you can't expect them to do that in their years after 30 years in music industry, but they could make another Zooropa-like album in few months, yes. But they're lazy and they always play safe.

    Totally agree here

In my opinion, 4 years is too much time to "record" an album. I know they have to rest, they have to tour, they have to be Bono etc... but they could release an EP or something like Zooropa in 1 year, maybe 2, while in tour

And I have a question: how much time they spend recording RaH?

    Greetings from Brazil
  8. yeah let's compare them to The White Stripes. That are two people and their music is kinda basic? I mean just drums, main guitar and sometimes some backing guitar that and a guitar that sounds like a bass plus some random shouts. Thats far more easy to mix and all the ideas come from one person.

We can all bash U2 here but this is how they do it and they won't change it. I don't care how long it takes. Quality matters.

Exactly. Of course there are songs that suffer from long writing/rewriting processes (All Because Of You, SUC, Magnificent) but other songs are really one of their best indeed like you said Unknown Caller. It's a beauty. Other song that they worked on very long is Streets.

They want to get this one right and they want to make a better album than their last one.
  12. according to u2eastlink.com's forum:

    - Universal Spain says that the Rose Bowl DVD will include a code that you can use on U2.com to download some brand new songs.

    - U2 will be playing a promo show in April/May to promote the new tracks and DVD (this coincides with the April 13/14 rumor)

*note, this is all rumor, nothing confirmed, but supposedly this will be announced on Monday.
