1. I think Elevation was a big change for the band and the correct choice of direction to go in at the time, after all the mega tours of the 90's it thought it was absolutely perfect to see this mega monster of a group go back to arenas and just playing. That gig at Irving Plaza was AMAZING! I was expecting another huge outdoor tour and couldnt believe it seeing the boys in places like Earls Court and Madison Square Garden. It was so personal,i fell in love with that album/tour.
Pop was still cool though! (esp God Will Send His Angels)
  2. I love the album...loved the tour....

I think it's so criticized because it was sort of rushed out of the studio. I hate that the band is starting to believe the critics, and make statements against the album and tour as well. It's kind of like what happened to Rattle-n-Hum. The band stood behind it...and then suddenly started to turn on it after paying too much attention to what the critics had to say.

Anyway...yup...I love POP ...it was and is fresh and fun. I love the lyrics too...there are some powerful songs on there such as Please, If God Will Send His Angels, and Wake Up Dead Man. There's also the fun, dancey songs such as Discoteque and Mofo...and of course it has it's sexy moments too...with If You Wear That Velvet Dress....and some out and out great tunes such as Gone, Staring At The Sun, and Last Night On Earth.

I think it's time that I give it a listen...it's been a while since I have...thanks for the reminder! lol

    Dream...

Popmart was good though. Mofo kicked ass but I especially liked the non-Pop songs.
I completely disagree with your whole post!!

I prefer the album to each of the individual songs (even though I love most of them). And, on the other hand, PopMart sucked... Specially the non-Pop songs!!!

Nice to have such different opinions, though

To really throw a spanner in, I completely disagree with both posts!

Pop rules as does Popmart! I particularly love the treatment that the non-Pop song received especially the disco-esque Streets, the fast-paced I Will Follow and the funky Mysterious Ways.
Plus only live performances of Hold Me, Kiss Me....

    A magical tour and era!
  5. pop mart is the only dvd i don´t have in my collection. i think pop has 5 stars songs:
mofo, ifwsha, gone, please, wake updead man, but for some reason i don´t like the overload of popmart tour.
  6. I've stated my opinion on this several times, but just in case someone misunderstands me, I quote myself:
Originally posted by LikeASong:I love the album they were supporting but the tour didn't make justice to it. Just too many backing tracks and too poor voice and energy most of the time. Popmart = 6 / 10 overall for me.

  7. Ok, but if you went to a concert just once like most fans do you would have walked away pretty satisfied, generally speaking.

I cite Mexico DVD and Leeds boot as examples of how Popmart excelled.

Oke, now I quote my parents, who have attended to Joshua, Zoo, PoPmart, Elevation, Vertigo and 360, and just one (always Madrid, except Elevation tour in Barcelona) concert from each tour:
My general impression on Popmart is that they tried to do something bigger and better than Zoo TV, but they epically failed. The set didn't connect with us the audience, and they were clearly not on top form. They didn't seem to be enjoying themselves... Ah, and I WIll Follow and One sucked!!
I don't know, it might be a particular opinion, but all I have is their opinion and a lot of bootlegs... And both things lead me to think what I think of Popmart.

About trying to be bigger and better....it's called satire.
Taking the piss out of mass-consumerism and over indulgence. And it WORKED!
It worked beautifully. But I will end it there.

Ignore the better and bigger part (which is in fact a great piece of satire, as you said) and try not to agree with the rest...

There's no need to stop arguing, we're not upset, just having different points of view. No offense intended, no insults... Therefore the discussion is OK

totally agree - and the only Popmart show i got to see was in fact LEEDS!!! - mind you i didn't realise it was one of the best shows of the tour til a few years ago when i started collecting bootlegs.

and so what if there were a few bad performances and bonos voice wasnt always great and they used loads of backing tracks and technology! - that was what made it all infinitely more interesting for me!

god i really miss the brave adventurous U2 that died with the end of the Popmart tour.. and the 90's... everything they did that decade was truly amazing, fresh, innovative and interesting - achtung, zooropa, passengers and pop - doesn't get much better than that...
