    32 minutes
Maybe thirty one and a half
    Until I hit the stairs
I been hidin' 'hind the notion
That if I don't make it,
    Somehow, I won't care

It won't happen this time, I think,
    As I make my climb
    And the doorways slam
But I pray that I'm wrong,
And maybe there is a God,
    Cause I always am

My world stops for a second or two,
    Every time I see you...

    [Chorus]
Then every day, I hit the landing
Catch her eye, it's a wonder I'm still standing
    And she smiles...
Maybe it's a reaction to a smile of mine
I won't try to hide it, I don't have time
Now, just like every day, the moment shatters
    And we walk away

    [Verse II]
Never wondering if I'm right or wrong
Just strollin' along, just strollin' along
'Til I sit down, and damn, I'm trapped again
I gotta let go, release the clutch
I think maybe I think too much
Stop worryin' about the why, and remember the when

    And I dream of 8:59
For the moment that you're mine...

    [Chorus]

    [Bridge]
The less time I spend trying to see myself in your eyes
The longer I can look at you with mine
And you'll never know that this is your song
17 minutes til I'm right where I belong...

    [Alternate Chorus]
Like every day, I hit the landing
But we both stop, it's a wonder I'm still standing,
    And we smile...

    [Chorus]

    [Outro Verse]
4 more hours til I see her again
Maybe more like 3 and a half
    Im caught up conversation,
But I can't help breaking to watch her pass
She tries to hide as she's looking around
Maybe someday she'll know I believe in what I've already found...
    And we'll smile

Love the lyrics but the 'tentative" title is definitely a keeper
  2. Jamming is a WHOLE lot easier if you know what key the music is your jamming overtop of. I jammed with my cousin's band a while ago, they played all of their songs, I just needed to know the key of each song and I basically soloed on top of their songs, and it sounded great, even though I didn't know the riffs or anything. Knowing the key is essential for guitar playing when you want to play with other people, it's not stupid, it's called "being a musician".

I think there was an element of irony being thrown about earlier, but that said I might be wrong. I would suggest that it's more called understanding music as opposed to being a musician, mind. I know a couple of people who know pretty much sod all about musical theory and the like, but play piano and guitar as good as anyone I've ever heard

(But knowing the key to a piece of music does make things a damned sight easier, granted )

Yeah, but will "jamming" get you a record deal? I would safely say that my mindless keyboard playing would get me a lot farther than "jamming." Plus, "musicians" alone are boring. Think of those country singers or whatever, they are boring. Where U2 on the other hand, they are entertainers. I'll gladly be an entertainer who entertains than a musician who "jams" any day.

    Also, well said Harry.

I think that's down to personal preference, taste, niche markets, who you take your stuff to if you feel it has merit and could be a success.

I like it, especially the part that I put in bold, it's beautiful.
  7. I'm in the midst of recording some stuff right now, should have it ready soon, just wanted to pick the brains of ye fair folk on some additional lyrics I've put together for the stuff I posted the other day.

    [Song 1]

And now here comes that time again
    When day passes to night
When the now becomes transformed to then
In the wait of the dawning light
With every sunrise I can see
    This world burst into life
    Throw away missed opportunities
    To the touchpaper, set 'light

    [instrumental break/hook]

The future could be bright if we
Just took our chance and ran
Down the roads that we could take today
    Throw away the masterplan
I've wanted to walk these paths before
    In dreams I walked alone
Look into these eyes and take my hand
This heart is as your own

    [instrumental break/hook]

    [middle 8]

    Never rest and never stay
In a past we cannot change
    Turn moments into memories
    Let burn the greatest flame
Chase the stars across the skies
To the sunset of our lives
Hold high the light of hope again
    The world awaits tonight

    [instrumental break/hook]

I toyed with the idea of swapping the 2nd and 3rd verses but having finished what is for now the 3rd verse, that's what I have. Thoughts?

    Change The World

I know that things aren't clear right now
We've all got a burden on our back
Every day seems like one more pointless step
Down some long and winding endless track

I know I've made mistakes before
God knows, I've got it wrong
Countless things I regret, things I've done
I just want to show you that I care
I just want to show you that I care

If I could change the world today
I'd change it all for you
If I could open up your eyes today
I'd make you see it all anew
I'd make you see it all anew

Every day can be a brand new start
A chance for us to change our ways
To take this life in our own hands
To give it all for what it's worth

I stand before you here today
    Everything, all that I am
I don't know what it is you want to hear
Just please give me another chance
Just please give me another chance

If I could change the world today
I'd change it all for you
If I could open up your eyes today
I'd make you see it all anew
I'd make you see it all anew

If I could change the world today
I'd change it all for you
If I could open up your eyes today
I'd make you see things like I do
I'd make you see things like I do

After much faffing around, that's what I've settled on. Again, any thoughts?

Jamming sparks ideas, which lead into songs, thats usually how a band writes music together. And if musicians are boring, why are you on a U2 forum? U2 are musicians, and if you think they don't know what key they're playing in, there's something going on inside your head Maybe when they first started out they were like uhhhhhhh, but now they definitely have some sense of theory. Even people like Hendrix, who was all soul and not about reading music, had some sense of theory. People don't just get by making a career on music not jamming, and not having any sense of theory, it wouldn't work. I barely have any, but I can at least tell you what key a song is in...

There was a fair bit of sarcasm intended in the uselessness of knowing a key...I agree, and have a slight bit of knowledge about keys/relative scales, and have used them to jam before, and it's gone over well.

My point was the point that Harry made- nothing more, nothing less- it's not necessarily about what you know how to do, it's about how you do it. I know absolutely nothing about piano, but years ago, someone taught me the notes in a few different chords, and I've been charming ladies with "Yellow" by Coldplay for years

Well you know I loved "Change the World', and I loved the minor changes you've made, so I won't dwell on that as much...

But this? This is like a modern day "Born to Run" (_O_ ), but it seems a little darker and mysterious, almost saying to me, instead of,

"We're gonna get to that place where we really wanna go, and we'll walk in the sun, BUT TIL THEN, TRAMPS LIKE US, BABY WE WERE BORN TO RUNNNNN!"...

It's got more of a mysterious, "Hey...let's make a break, you wanna?" quietness to it that just stirs something up inside of me. At least until that last verse, which is more of the declaration it looks like. Lovvve it.

I won't toy with your musical ideas for it, but I definitely hear that with some sort of quiet, driving force behind it. Something that almost pulses and makes you want to run off like the song suggests.

I'm so excited to be hearing things from you Harry, it's really neat stuff! Keep it up!!!

Thankyou Matt it's so pleasing to see a reaction like that, 'cause I figure they're the sort of ideas I've been working on trying to capture for a long time now, and any comparison to the Boss is honour indeed! In hindsight too, Born To Run is probably a better match than the songs I talked about earlier...

I'm not sure whether I can call it finished or not (lyrics-wise that is; I'm still really trying to nail down the music outside of the basic structure and melodies), but it's lifted me to hear your thoughts. It's the kind of thing running through my mind whenever I come 'round to this song, that blend of uncertainty, escape and hope etc., and when I was recording the piano part I've been building the song around earlier on, I did get a little tingle down my spine, because I do love working on it, and hopefully when it's finished it'll be worth this effort. I'll probably record an acoustic guitar + vocals layer in the next couple of days so you can get an idea of the song in action. In the meantime, who knows what'll happen!
