  1. The band members are still paying taxes on a "personal" level though. The money they get from the business.

EDIT: And there it is, my first real double post Post 1127.

And I am ABSOLUTELY in favour of applying higher taxes to those who earn more money. Absolutely.

    PS. We're going too off-topic, I think... !!!

Bit more off-topic: In my country because of the corruption and bribing, the government trying to introduce a 98% tax to anyone who earns more than 2 million forints (approx. 7500 euros) a month. So it's good for Bono he's not Hungarian.
  4. The whole Dutch tax story was bad public relations management by U2. I blame McGuinness. However, all this protest crap at Glastonbury is just nonsense posturing. Nobody there will really care about Ireland's finances or U2's tax compliance. Seriously. Surely people are there to have a good time.

You have to ask what is this protest group's motivation? Some deep concern for Ireland or the publicity involved in having a go at Bono. Bono is such an easy target these days. Obviously, he has to accept some responsibility for the stuff that comes out of his mouth sometimes, but look, the guy's heart is in the right place even if his taxes are not, that's clear to everyone surely. I suspect any protest will be shortlived and all the haters can head over to watch Bobby Gillespie on the other stage or whatever. The BBC will be careful with their coverage too.

U2 isn't to blame for the state of Ireland's economy and have in fact contributed 'more than a lot' to our country for 30 years. Our nation's finances were badly managed by greedy and shortsighted politicians. I remember Bono offering to be Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) back in 1992, but they didn't give him the job, did they?

    98% ?!
    Sure about that ?
Would mean you only have 150 euro after the taxes... Can't be ?

  6. Yes, it's true. Of course it's not for bus drivers or office workers. This is for politicians and business owners to avoid bribing and corruption.

All i see is two hypocritic parties, Ireland for expecting U2 to swallow the bill while they ask companies from other countries not to and U2 for taking the ugly route to Holland (where they bring in money for the Dutch, thank you very much ).

The easies solution is not seeing it as a big deal, happens every day. We all know we like to pay as less taxes as possible.

Risto, you hit the nail on the head. From mid 90's the Irish government lured foreign (mosty American) companies into the country with low tax arrangements, resulting in lot of jobs, although many were also taken from people abroad(like me), as they needed the language skills (companies that moved out again when the tax arrangement was to an end) The celtic tiger was born, and what the government did in those years is that they lowered the taxes each year on budget day. Great for the people back then, but now they pay the price of it. Also a lot of money was made in the real estate business, prices going through the roof, lot earned on stamp duty. Instead of saving money when all is going well they didn't. Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry to see the state of the current economy, but then you have this ejit protesting against U2? The band could have easily moved to the UK or the US and then Ireland would have nothing. Would they complain if the band emigrated?? U2 stayed loyal to Dublin. They should calculate ho much money U2 has generated for the city for example in tourism. Boldly I can say that maybe 75% wouldn't be even interested in Dublin weren't it for U2 to give the city it's shine. And what does the band get, yes, freedom of the city, but in general they always get shit, protests around concerts (popmart Landsdowne, others with Croke).

Kind of funny story, last summer holiday we we're walking in Modena and there were loads of Shamrock Rovers fans, so was wondering what was happening. Was great talking to them, as they play now in Tallaght where I've also lived. So we were talking about football then I asked who they were playing, it was Juventus. I was surprised, but then I said aahh yeah, U2 is playing in Turin, so you had to move here. Biggest mistake ever to say that haha, the comments I got, that gobshite this, that band that, seemed everybody hated Bono anyway. To underline the atmosphere

Sorry, but this kind of protest pisses me of, they should protest against the real issues and money down the drain actions, but well, it's always easy to pic on U2.

So that's actually the penalty after they get caught for bribing/corruption ? Not a tax rate from the beginning ?
  9. I started reading this thread from the start but very quickly got bored,,,,,, I know its now a hot topic because of the "protest" news....... But for my penny's worth, last year was my first Glasto experience and yes having been a U2 fan for nearly 30 years I was dis-appointed to not see them but what some people here need to realise Glastonbury IS AN EXPERIENCE, I have been to many other UK festivals and a few concerts in europe but Glastonbury is unique as far as I am concerned.

Tickets are sold and sold out before the line up is announced, it is a festival like no other there is so much more to it and because of that the people that go are more relaxed.

Gorillaz who replaced U2 last year were beforehand a worthy choice but failed on many levels, Muse stole the festival even without the Edge, that was the icing on the cake.

The difference with U2 over any other band appearing at Glastonbury is their stage show, ZOO TV even aspects of Popmart could have made it but 360 no chance so it will be so different and because of that it WILL be brilliant.

Whatever they play, and they know what they have to play, will be so well received..... some aspects of what they are currently doing on tour will be included but many wont......

Personally I would love to see "streets" open, I only ever saw JT at Murrayfield where they opened walking on to "stand by me" brilliant as it was when I first saw R&H and the version of Streets played as they walked on and the film going from B&W to colour gave and still gives me goosebumps....

What they will do and I am sure they will achieve it is prove to everyone watching what a great live band they are irrespective of light shows gimmicks lemons mirror balls and claws... everyone here and on all the fan sites around the world know that seeing U2 in concert is an event in itself always has been and always will.

Yes they try to continually push the boundaries of enjoyment in their own environment but for those who now doubt their ability remember live aid, remember the festival appearances during the war period.... JT with just a back drop.

On their day no band can touch them, yes it will not be a full U2 audience but it will be a music loving audience and a respectful one at that. All that is required is that the band give 100% because that is all anyone can ask of an artist.

If they DO open with streets and finish with WOWY (shine like stars/LWTUA) I will die happy if they play a 360 set I will die happy, If they play something completely different I will die happy.

roll on the 24th June I will be out of control, it will be a magnificent beautiful day, If it rains I will get on my boots, they will walk on and they will walk off, there will certainly be people moving in mysterious ways.

if you are there with me enjoy the night if you can watch it live on BBC if you cant, downland it from a site a few days after it will be an occasion to enjoy however you can.

    PEACE
  10. I can't wait to get a recording of this performance - and it hasn't even happened yet!
