1. While I would give both Ten and Vs. five stars, there are too many low points on Vitology for me to put it that high. As I've said before, it has some of my favorites, but those other songs knock off at least a half star, and maybe a full one.
  2. I agree with what you are saying. Its hard to argue with your points. But,if you take those songs out,Vitalogy is a classic release.I used to have the same argument about The Bealtes White Album. There are so many classic songs, but there are a few duds (Bungalow Bill,Dont Pass Me By,Revolution 9) as well.Check this setlist out without Bugs, and the other silly EV inspired tunes....

    1) Last Exit
    2) Spin The Black Circle
    3) Not For You
    4) Tremor Christ
    5) Whipping
    6) Corduroy
    7) Satan's Bed
    8) Better Man
    9) Nothingman
    10) Immortality

IMO,if that was how Vitalogy was released,it would have been one of the best releases in the 90s..Its still a great record, even with the Revolution 9 out-takes.

For some reason,Eddie was hell-bent on being so anti-Pearl Jam at that point. He was very upset by Cobains remarks. He actually didnt want Better Man released.Brendan OBrien had to beg him to put it on the record.Of course,he then refused to allow Better Man to be released as a single,or God forbid a video. But,it still dominated radio airplay.Much to Vedder's chagrin.

On the first 2 releases,PJ was Stone and Jeffs band.Vitalogy,Eddie was more in control.By No Code,he was in total complete control. He almost ended Pearl Jam by being so anti-commercial.Anti video.Anti ticketmaster etc....

Fans in the early days couldnt see the band.I remember being like "What the fuck am I doin in Randalls Island" in 1996.It was,and still is a dump. The band finally played MSG and real arenas in 1998,after their heyday.....

Imagine if PJ had played MSG in 1994-1995......

His intentions were good, but it was an unproductive fight.I would have loved a video for Daughter,Small Town,Animal,Better Man etc.If you see PJ today, they make videos (The Fixer) and use Ticketmaster....

Jeremy,by the way,is still one of my all-time favorite videos.....

The End and Just Breathe are so great for me.It was such a relevant release for the band.Yeild was the last PJ album that made a lil noise.

Unthought Known, The Fixer, Just Breathe, and The End stand up with PJ's classics. I think Backspacer is "good" - hence the three-start rating. However, I now skip "Got Some" every time it comes on one of the 2010 or 2011 shows I've been listening to, "Amongst The Waves" is good but I'm glad they decided to not play it every night, "Gonna See My Friends" is fine in small doses, "Supersonic" is good, not a fan of "Force of Nature"...I can't even hum "Johnny Guitar" or "Speed of Sound" right now which, to me, makes them forgettable. Time may change all of this, of course, but this is where I'm at now.

This is how I listen to it - when I actually listen to the studio tracks, that is.

It might have been nice to have promo videos for these songs, but in the spirit of the bands wishes, I am glad when we hear the song we don't think of some movie.

  6. I like videos. It never ruined anything for me.But,I understand the point.

Backspacer,I agree, has a few duds.Johnny Guitar and Supersonic are weak.Got Some isnt bad.I actually blasted it before when it came on PJ Radio. But The Fixer,Just Breathe and The End really got the band alot of attention, and from casual music fans.It was a strong relevant release.Like All That You Cant Leave Behind and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb....(5 star releases IMHO)

  7. I have Vitalogy on now...nothing like headphones and Nothingman.....
  8. It's just that I have heard "Got Some" WAY too many times over the past few months. I did think it was okay for the first little while.

I don't think I even ripped the other tracks onto my computer.

I probably should listen to it this way at some point, but even with these songs there are still some songs I dislike. I can't stand Satan's Bed, Whipping is not one of my favorites, and, I might be crazy for saying this, but I just don't like Spin the Black Circle. I hated it when I heard it on Rearviewmirror years ago, and it hasn't grown on me at all. So even with this lineup, I still don't give it 5 stars.

I'll agree with you on the White Album, even though I'd still give that five stars. Part of its greatness is the fact that the four of them hated each other so much while they made it, and they still made amazing music. Yeah, it would have been even better had it not been a double album (wouldn't most double albums?), but all of them wanted their songs on it, and no one would budge. But seriously, Rvolution 9 makes me want to jump off a cliff. I guess this is for a different topic though.
  11. Get away from Backspacer for a while Matt. Then, after a couple months, put it on.I do that alot. You might have a different outlook on it.I have been playing alot of PJ studio this weekend.Something I hardly ever do....Roit Act sounds good...I havent listened to it in ages..dare I say years ??
  12. I always got a kick out of Satans Bed,it has a good rockin beat.

You dont like Spin The Black Circle ??????. .....lol...Dont ever say that on PJ.com forums..you might get death threats....you would be putting yourself in imminent danger sir......LOL
