  2. I've downloaded a bunch (not all) of the shows from the link Ronnie posted a feew pages back. Atlanta '94, Melbourne '95, SLC '95, Berlin '96, Melbourne '98, and Seattle '98 all sound great. Combining these with the some-what official releases of Moore Theatre '92 (vault series), Boston '94, and Live on Two Legs (from the 1998 tour), we're doing pretty well for having awesome sounding 1990's shows.

    It's kind of funny hearing "Pearl Jam" and "Metal" together but I suppose rock music is rock music in all sorts of forms.

    The program has some discussion on whether grunge is metal. They sure have their similarities, but they sure have their dissimilarities as well.

    Just looking at the bands (PJ, AIC, Soundgarden, etc) in the early 1990's, they had the long hair like many metal band - just not the hairspray and make-up.

    Alice in Chains, to me, were somewhat metal. Their first album, Facelift, has some metal-esque songs. Soundgarden were quite heavy early on, so I can see the connection. However, albums like Dirt and Superunknown are hard but definitely not metal to me. I never, however, thought Pearl Jam as being a metal band. Same with Nirvana.
  9. great starting point of discussion Matt .. i would have opened a topic on grunge/Seattle scene since time ..i guess it's quite clear i'm a huge lover of it .. the last real shock with a solid substance in music and not only.
    but i didn't want it get lost in the dust, some few posts and then dead .. so if some think it's worth to open a topic .. lets do it!

    coming to your statement it's hard to frame grunge music in a style, to put a label (some of them really hate to be labelled).
    trying with the main 5 bands lets try to say some influences
    Alice In chains / Soundgarden heavy and Black Sabbath influence
    Nirvana punk i should say
    Pearl Jam punk-rock mixed with The Who (the hardest to define in my opinion)
    Screaming Trees psychedelic hard rock
    at least at the beginning then things evolved
    then lots of other "minor" bands (but very important for the movement), such as Mudhoney, Melvins, U-Men, Green River, Skin Yard and on and on, that incorporate the above said elements and others.
    one thing put them all together .. the attitude towards music and how it should be .. just music .. basic instruments and lots of energy deep emotions meanings and so on .. and the attitude towards live concerts .. amazing energetic adrenalinic.
    cool how all the bands, almost, were really connected together.
    i stop here .. uhm there'd be lot to talk about it .. i would really have liked living in Seattle in the late 80's-early 90's!

  10. One big difference between grunge and metal is the much more expressive vocalists in grunge. Usually with pained voices. Grunge is also much more simple, a close relative of punk.
  11. It's a mixture of most rock genres compiled into one genre. That's grunge.
  12. much more simple? i have to disagree .. Matt Cameron, Kim Thayil, Jerry Cantrell work over there are not that simple (my opinion of course) .. not mentioning Mike fingers and Stone jems

    from grunge bands impressive and amazing singers came out .. Eddie, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Mark Lanegan ...
