A stunning version of Release opens up N2.Its such a great song, and you can already feel,as if this show is going to surpass N1.Solid versions of WWS,Life Wasted and Severed Hand follow. These 3 are great right after one another. This great run continues, with a grinding version of Hail Hail,a song I have always loved.
Unemployable slows the momentum, trips up the feel, and seems forced here.Playing 4 out of 6 songs from the new release PJ,is a bit much to open a show IMO.Skip this one.
Dissident,Even Flow and Corduroy sound fantastic. It just bothers me that Unemployable messed up,what would have been a fantastic opening.Dissident is slightly flubbed at the start.(Jeff ?) But,I love this one,and it should be shown more respect.
Mike,as usual, goes absolutely bonkers on Even Flow.Really good middle jam after his solo.Crowd get all involved, and love it,as they should. As the song ends, you can actually hear a female say " Oh yeah, that was fucking awesome !!!!".I agree.(I listened to this gig with my Bose Quiet Comfort 15 headphones.Sound is amazing.)
Next thing you know,Corduroy is starting. This is what PJ is all about,Matt going off, drums smashing,Mike jamming,Jeff doing the human pogo,Stone doing the pigeon dance, and Eddie..being Eddie.
The band really put the brakes on,and continue with I AM Mine. This is by far,my favorite song off Riot Act.They can play this one at all my gigs.IMO,this should have been played later on.
Low Light keeps with the slow acoustic feel, but this tune does nothing for me.Never has, never will.Off She Goes anyone ?
Now up,its the heart attack,in your face Whipping. The up and down of the set isnt good.Whipping ( a song I like),should have played after Corduroy.I like the groovy Toronto intro.
You Are is a good tune, but PJ have so many superior songs to pick from.Of course, the start is butchered. It sounds so off.Again, its the song placement.Up and down.Maybe Last Exit could have been played instead ?
2 classics now.I Got Shit and Better Man.I AM Mine might have fit better here ? A toast to Uncle Neil of course, and I can hear a fan say 'I love Neil Young".After “I Got Shit”, Ed told the crowd he had a secret to tell, that this won’t be on the bootlegs (it is) and first sang the chorus of “I Got Shit” by himself, then sang “I wanna be with a Cinnamon Girl, I want to live the rest of my life with a Cinnamon Girl”, hinting the similarity in the two choruses.
Better Man sounds fantastic.Crowd is loud, and Ed backs off during the opening.Solid version,Save It For Later tag is here
Jeremy,my second most loved PJ tune,is played here,in all its glory.I love it,and as I said about Dissident,Jeremy should be played more.Ed introduces it simply saying "This is a song".Crowd sing along during the outro,Ed doesnt go "off",but its still good.
Now,the curveball.Marker In The Sand.Really Ed ? Now,towards the end of the main set you play this ? C'MON MAN !!
I know its off the new album, and yes,it should be played at a show from 2006.But song placement is key.Its a below average song,AND SHOULD NOT BE PLAYED TOWARDS THE END OF THE MAIN SET.
Black,my all time favorite PJ song, gets things back in line. The song just flows.I can see EV singing it here, eyes closed, clutching the mic...just perfect.Mikes solo is spot on,crowd sings "do do do, do.. do do do.....do do do, do.. do do do......"..song of the night ? no question....
RVM ends the main set on a high.Its a classic,goes on a bit though,but I enjoy it.
Picture what this ending run could have looked like,by removing Marker In The Sand.
I Got Id
Better Man
Jeremy
Black
RVM
Hard to top that run....
Encore 1
Wasted Reprise > Man of the Hour..Hmmmm,not great, different yes.I would have liked it more played mid set, with I AM Mine, drop Low Light and play these 2.I like Man of the Hour,so I wont go off here, but once again, song placement means so much....
Samll Town..its a classic...Crowd love it....and Ed tells them "tonight really feels like the start of the tour".
SOLAT,Evolution and Alive ? very, very good..these are all PJ classics..love it.SOLAT sounds exceedingly strong here.Great way to end the first encore,4 classics.
Encore 2
Go,a song I have always loved, opens encore 2 with some serious intensity.Love it.Awesome version here.
Crazy Mary is always fun.Its a good one for the encores.Nice version here.
Fuckin Up is a tune I really enjoy.Great jam here.Id take this over RITFW every time.Props to Uncle Neil.EV cant resist,"George Bush loves this song'....haha..unreal.
Indifference is such a beautiful song.I love it,and Id take this one over Ledbetter every time. You would have thought the show was over here,as Fuckin Up and Indifference are usually show closers. But the band are really on fire tonight, unlike the previous show, and they play Yellow Ledbetter.Ed laughs during the whole song. There was a banner that said "Impeach Bush"...how fucking lovely.
Long show,very very solid.
4 1/2 stars
Show could have been an epic 5 star gig.Its very, very good,no question. But poor song placement, and some odd songs in the set (You Are,Low Light ?) took the rating down a notch.Plus,Marker in the Sand killed an epic end of set run.
Highlights are plenty : Release,Hail Hail,I AM Mine,I Got Shit,Better Man,Jeremy,Black,SOLAT,Evolution,Go,Crazy Mary,Fuckin Up and of course Indifference.
Yeah,I think is was really good, and at times great.Just didnt like the placement of some tunes.I could never get into Marker. Its my Got Some of 2006...LOL
Id say on Monday or Tues...It easier to listen to gigs during the week, when my kids are in school...I rip the disc's to my iPod,and listen as I go for a jog downtown.
