1. I was going to say that the problem is that The Beatles are so overhyped its hard to take them for the important people that they were, but in fact it should really be the opposite...

Think about it. In the 60s, how easy would it have been to see the pure talent and genius behind The Beatles? It would have been near impossible. The hype that surrounded them then was so extreme and so thick, it would be years before you could really look back and say "wow".

Today, it should be simple. You should be able to look at the McCartney/Lennon catalog and not even think twice about how basically amazing it is. There's no hype about The Beatles anymore because they're done- the only hype that lasts is (albeit annoying) people who won't shut their mouths about how they're STILL the greatest band in the world.

They're not "still" anything. They've been gone a long time. You're allowed to have an opinion, but at least respect the fact that there's been good music between now and then, and some of it is still being made.

The simplest melodies, the simplest chord progressions...hell- the first ever recorded use of feedback- a GIVEN sound in rock music today- were discovered by The Beatles. It's easy to get lost in every song that's taken a Beatles melody, or that uses a songwriting technique like the Fab Four did, but it shouldn't be so hard to trace it all back to where it started- where it belongs. Those techniques and things we take for granted now have owners- and those things are owned by The Beatles.

Never before had a band _________________. You can fill in the blank with so many different things it should make your head spin.

They're "overrated" by today's standards because its simply not the 60s and its an easy remark to make. I make it all the time. But when I sit down and really think about it, like I am now, I think maybe I should hold my tongue. How can we judge something as overrated when we haven't lived through its initial impact? We only survive to hear the results, and I shudder to think what music we would have had to endure if The Beatles hadn't established some normalcy and standard for greatness in rock n' roll.

Also, I'll just add that when The Beatles came around, there was no "void to be filled". They created something. They didn't produce a sound that had been around and perfected, and then disappeared, leaving some empty space where great sounds once existed.

They didn't show up at a party that had already been going on, and revive it. They moved into the house next door and threw a party that was unlike anything anyone had ever seen or heard.
  3. In a recent Q magazine... There were "The Real Best Of" quite a few bands. In the into to the Beatles the writer said something that really struck me. It was about the almost creepy fact that they are the only underrated band ever....
  4. Now I don't know if I fully agree with that, but it is really worth thinking about.

What they achieved will never be achieved again. They are the greatest.

Is there an online link to this article? I'd really like to read it.

    Another wonderful post, Matt.
  8. ^I'd say the post has a bit of "balls" - even if I disagree with it.

Dissing The Beatles is dangerous - even on a U2 forum.

  9. Yeah, so would I. Do you have the magazine, Olof? If you do, please scan it.
  10. All the best ofs or just the Beatles one? There are a few more bands that might be of interest, some Irish one fonr example.

Edit: I won't scan them all, but I will get a list.
