1. Seriously, if Bono's on twitter, we want the link YESTERDAY!
  2. I understand their desire to be relevant again (think 2001/2002--they were everywhere: MTV, NBA finals halftime show, Superbowl, hit after hit from ATYCLB, esp. Beautiful Day). What is the highest goal a band/musician can achieve? To be as popular as possible while still maintaining a high level creativity. They've done this before a few times, most notably with Achtung Baby. To not challenge themselves to reach that level again would be so un-U2. Radiohead's fine and all, but they've gone so far into the creative realm it's like they've compromised too much, I think. U2 don't have to "chase the mainstream"...that can come naturally. And it doesn't necessarily mean that they'll have songs that sound like the b.s. that's out there now. Again, AB was completely out there, yet was still insanely popular.

I personally just want them to be relevant again so they can prove the doubters wrong. What band in their mid-50s has ever done that before?? I want my friends who aren't into U2 so much to at least KNOW about their new music (not like NLOTH--no one knew anything about that). I'm sick of people saying they're washed up and haven't made "good" music since 1991. Again, the high point for a band is being popular (relevant) and creatively free. Why not strive to reach that goal??? I say they go for it.
  3. They aren't going to break up and for one good reason. What the fuck is Bono going to do? He doesn't have the pull as a solo artist and he loves being the front man of the biggest band and writing songs. They could say "that's it" tomorrow and I'm sure we'd hear something new and see them tour no more than 5 years from now. I'm not worried.

  4. This, this this!

Also, I really do think they've got something amazing in them. The reason why all this talk of calling it a day is even happening is because it's right after the end of the monstrous 360 tour. Whether or not the new album was a hit, you would have to be brain dead to think that U2 360 was a failed tour. If anything, the band proved that they can be relevant and commercially successful even without a top notch album.

From a musical standpoint, I really think the band still has amazing songs to write. As we all know, NLOTH was an exploration of a new theme for the band. Perhaps the band will try another theme or return to something that has worked for them and add a new twist to it.

I've got a feeling that the band is right on the edge of releasing some killer songs. I'm talking about songs that can be compared to Streets.
  5. I really like NLOTH. I almost love it. I'm probably spoiled by how good previous albums are to really love it like it deserves to be loved. Still, I think Breathe
was a nice song, Magnificent was classic U2, and other songs were pretty good. I am a little concerned that Every Breaking Wave, North Star, and Mercy are among the stronger "new" songs....and they are all really old. I hope they do what they want to do.

I am concerned that Bono keeps talking about relevance, and hit records. There's nothing wrong with wanting a hit, or wanting to sell a certain amount, but
if one looks at the music business, music sales are not what they used to be. For older acts, music sales are almost dead. Not many over 50 can even sell a million, so NLOTH was a massive success based on older artists sales.

I suppose I am a little greedy, but I would like a new U2 album in 2012, 2015, 2018, and 2021. I also would like R&H, Zooropa, and Pop to have re-releases with all the outtakes and demos. In fact, a box set with 150 tracks would suit me fine. I'd love to hear the scrapped original version of Pop.
So 4 new albums and one huge, massive box set, a live DVD box set, and 3-4 more tours through 2021 would be fine with me. I doubt it will happen, though. I figure REM calling it quits at least caught their attention. Even if the next 4 U2 albums are all weak, I'd still be happy they were trying. As a Prince fan, and a Guns N' Roses fan, I have two artists on the extremes of how much to release. Prince has released tons of stuff, and Guns have hardly released anything. The more the better, as far as I'm concerned. Even if they only release one or two more albums, they should release all the lesser quality tracks, and not worry about how good they are. As long as it is not total crap, I'm fine with an outtake box set with some tracks that are just ok.

Yes, and Bono coming to all our houses to sign the massive box set in person.

    Keep it realistic, people
  7. "There's been a lot of talk about this [..], maybe, maybe too much talk. This is not a [..]"
    (sorry for the quote hehehe)

i don't address it to none of the posts here of course .. talking, thoughts and opinions are absolutely always lawful, welcome and whatever else.
i mean it to the scoopers (to get attention?) .. no news on the horizon .. another "news", "scoop" that periodically appear almost every year since ages.
  8. For those wondering what Bono means by relevant:

The 7th top selling album of 2009 worldwide [1] followed by the largest grossing tour in global history is NOT relevant. Draw from this what you will.

[1] According to IFPI sources. Also note that it was topped by a talent show contestant, Susan Boyle and the death of Michael Jackson forced This Is It to the top 5. Removing these two, U2 actually placed 5th.
