1. It's alright...just sort of laying around with nothing to do. The usual it seems. You?
  2. Pretty much the same. I don't have any classes on Fridays, so I'm just hanging out into the wee hours of the night. I was trying to find Pulp Fiction, because I KNOW it's in my house on DVD somewhere, but I can't find it..somehow that movie has evaded me and I've never seen it.
  3. I managed to luck out and not get classes Monday, Wednesday, OR Friday

You've NEVER seen Pulp Fiction?! Keep searching, man..
  4. Wicked! I don't have them on Mondays, and I get off Wednesdays at 10:30AM. My tuesdays are brutal, but it's worth it. And yeah, I know! The same thing happened with Indiana Jones. I had never seen them until a few weeks ago. Don't think I'm one of those people who doesn't watch movies, because I'm a big movie buff. Somehow a few HUGE movies have just passed me by though...

    So how's the band going?
  5. It's alright, on hiatus for the school year since we all go to difference colleges. Sort of a summer only gig. Winter is gear acquisition time How about you, how are your musical endeavors?
  6. Ah, right on. Mine's been pretty quiet. Two guys left my band at the end of last summer, which sucked, and just recently my buddy and I have been putting up signs around our campus looking for some poeple. We may have found two guys just in the past couple days, which is awesome if it works out.

As far as gear acquisition goes, I'm thinking of picking up an electric drum kit this summer. I have no knowledge on how to play them, but whenever I go into the music store I spend at least an hour playing one of those electric kits, they're so damn fun and it's not super hard to pick up a simple 4/4 beat anyway. It'd be great for home-recordings. All I'd need is a bass after that and I could record complete songs! It'd be awesome. But if this band thing works out with these new guys, I won't need to learn how to play drums anyway
  7. Ah yeah, that would be a great recording tool. Plus broadening your horizons and teaching yourself a new instrument (best you can anyway) never hurt anyone. Hopefully that all works out for you, whether they join you or you get the kit.

What's your practice space like? Just a garage somewhere, or a room? Curious as to how you're swinging it at a university, especially with a drummer that would potentially be transporting his kit.

    Yeah for sure.

Well, lucky for me I go to university about an 8 minute drive from where I live. So a practise space would generally be mine, or someone's basement. But yeah the transporting of drums is a speed bump that always has to be gone over, not sure how well figure that one out. I talked to the drummer today (he's actually in a few of my classes) and I THINK he said that the bassist (the two of them happen to know eachother) has a drum kit of his own in HIS basement. So it'll probably come down to whether they want to practise in my basement (which is pretty spacious, it's actually perfect) and transport everything, or have us go to his place. I'm still pretty...nervous? or maybe anxious or something about starting a band with two guys I've barely talked to, it should be interesting. They liked the demos we sent them and said they were super interested so hopefully there's some chemistry in terms of influence and musical preference. At least I'm hoping there will be!
  9. Oh nice, glad everything is going smoothly so far!

For our practices, we generally stay in our drummer's garage. His parents both work during the days, so their cars are always out and they aren't around to be bothered by the noise. The town police, however...

Let's just say we know a few of the officers by name. Some of them actually enjoy coming around to answer calls on us because they love hearing us play. It's quite an uncanny relationship we have with the police. Some of the shows that we play for the year are actually community-organized, park-district type of shows that are free to the public and sponsored by the community and taxpayers. So, when we are practicing for those...sort of hard to justify shutting us down!

Haha, that's awesome, but yeah I can see that getting a bit annoying. Do you guys write your own material or generally play covers and stuff?
  11. Generally just covers...being so pressed for time, and having certain shows that require us to draw a crowd in order for us to get paid/even booked again (places like restaurants with stages that want to make sure we're making them money)...it's hard to buckle down and really write strong tunes. The other guitar player and I write frequently, and send demos across the internet fairly often. Only one has ever turned into an original song recorded by the full band though. We've jammed on several originals, and in actuality if we were practicing 3 times a week all year, cranking them out would be easy as cake with the way we play together...it just always seems to fit.

This summer we hope to build a few more originals into our set.

Nice, nice. Yeah I can see that being a problem when playing bars and restaurants and stuff. Most of the bands I see when I'm at a bar or whatever on a saturday night are only playing covers, but if that's what it takes to pay the bills, I've got no issue with that. Plus playing covers is always a blast anyway. Bands that want to play their own stuff around here usually play open mic nights or these "event" nights they have at a particular bar downtown. You can sign up with this local promoter that everybody hates and they can get you spots at these events. It sucks dealing with them, because they basically have a "we give you 30 tickets, you have to sell at least 20, if you don't YOU have to make up the difference" policy, and they take a cut of the 10 that you sell over their minimum. But in the end if you're trying to get your stuff heard it's the best way to do it. People show up to check out their friend's band and end up hearing a ton of strange music in the same night. Our first gig was actually at a bar that most bands don't get to play in until they have a decent amount of local fans that can come out to see them play. We were meant to open for this band that had a small following, but we ended up playing after them because one of them had to be up early or something. It was pretty cool being supported on our first gig, we didn't really say it like that or anything, but it was definitely a thought! I just can't wait to get up there and start performing stuff I've written again.
