1. Precisely my attitude to my HS10 and as Aidan says, a DSLR is the next step. I have 30x zoom and it performs great in my opinion. Not really into videography but I have recorded some macro footage in '1080p' on it, obviously only 1080p in name and spec, not quality. It's not poor quality at all, I just wouldn't go expecting true HD. Have you researched video tests on YouTube?
  2. Yes, I have. Sure it doesn't equal a Canon Vixia or a Sony CX360 in image quality, but then again it's just a fraction of their price. I am aware of that. I'm not seeking perfect image quality (who would in the 300 bucks range?), but more of a step up from my crappy compact, without getting into the unconvenient and expensive DSLR world.

The HS10 was another option, but it's significantly more expensive (around 70 bucks more) for having similar specs. Moreover, I've tested (at a store, but still better than nothing) both and the P500 felt quite better on the hand. It's lighter and smaller, which is perfect for the purpose I'm pursuing: a good performing camera that allows me to do "everything" with acceptable quality, maximum possible convenience and adjusted price.
  3. Also 30x optical zoom is someting you wont find easily for a dSLR. And it works pretty good with enough light!
  4. I have taken very gorgeous sunrise pics all through the years. I live in a house around 100 meters above Madrid area and facing east, so every day of the year I have this wonderful sunrises that never fail to leave me breathless

    Will check your gallery, Tim

Nothing like having those with sea though.
  6. Anybody been checking out any samples from the New Nokia 808 Pureview? Some stunning results showing up even in comparisons to high end point and shoots.

Yes. I checked it the day it was presented at some technology party in Los Angeles I think, and I was hardly impressed; 41 megapixels are absolutely useless when you've got a small lens like that (it's huge for a mobile phone but still very small compared to most compacts and of course to DSLRs). Video recording is good but not amazingly good. And for God's sake, could not they give it a Windows Phone OS? ...
  8. I think it's a little unfair to say you're hardly impressed by the camera. For a phone, it's hard to deny that it's right up there with the best camera phones that have been released. Some of the images that have been snapped by the 808 are impressive considering it's a camera phone. The crispness is there for sure, but the colour representation and it's metering capabilities are lacking in my opinion. From the photographs I've seen, they seem to be dull and lacking that instant wow. Maybe this can be altered in photoshop, adjust the shadows and highlights, bump the contrast, adjust the levels maybe. All in all, it's a very good camera for what it is.

I agree with Gerard, put some of these photos up against some from a compact camera and you might struggle to pick out the camera phone. I imagine that they look great on the device and they look good enough to view on The internet, but how much bigger you can go before you start to lose the benefits of a larger sensor remains to be seen for me.
  9. Have to disagree with the colours comment Tim. like nearly all Nokia cameras they opt to go for the 'as is' approach giving the most accurate reproduction of the scene with very little (if any) processing. I much prefer this approach to Apples (and others) which artificially alters colours etc to give that more 'pleasing' look.
