1. vinyl sales are better than cds.i would relish any physical form of single releases.cause that means b-sides and b-sides are awesome

They may have enough money to do this, but U2 is not only a band, it's a business. And like all businesses, U2 wants to make moves that will make them money. This move will not make them any money, so they won't do it.
You probably hit the nail on the head there. Let's take no risks for our businness and do the safe approach, even if it means letting our lifelong fans without their beloved physical CDs forever more.

Same as Zoo TV when they ended up making almost no profit of a 2 year long tour that set the basis for the next decades' rock shows. Yeah.

It stopped meaning awesome b-sides quite some years ago with U2 huh? Unless you count remixes as awesome b-sides (which I don't).
  4. Behind the scenes.

To be honest, now that I've got a job that allows me at least some disposable income, I would probably buy physical singles now. We tend to be defined by the things we keep and I think being defined by the music I love isn't a bad thing at all.

Once again, with you here. They released the physical of the album.

The argument of losing money tours doesnt hold water here. Sorry. Thats like saying we lost money to give our fans the best experience, now lets take a bath releasing a physical single that only the die hards will buy.

Not to mention, in the case of the latter, the single would have much more label input and involvement anyway as it would be there money, not the bands, manufacturing the single.

Of course you would, as would I. But let's be real, we're small cogs in a big wheel. This is a digital age. And I'm spoiled. I want the classic U2 single formula... with a fresh b-side.

I could care less about the techno house remix with loops and beats added to the song in the studio. I know I'm in the minority here, and getting off topic, but I figured I' d drop that in while on subject. The fact there are no digital singles probably has to do with fact that you can buy the single from the album. And they have offered alternate versions for fans to download at u2.com

most remixes are a waste for me....most.
but.. big girls are best, always, are you gonna wait forever, the real b-sides.

I think we're still roughly on topic given that SFS is the next single. With no physical copies confirmed, will they release a new mix on U2.com or as a digital purchase via iTunes?

The music industry has gotten incredibly complicated with the ability to pick and choose which songs you want from an album (although it's always more cost effective to just buy the entire album). We also have on-demand streaming services such as spotify that surely eat away from the rest of the music sales.

Yes. So in this case, maybe we'll see a fan download of an alternate version of SFS much like EBW? I dunno. I'm just a fan who, while I would like to see physical singles, as a former label person, understand why there's not...

I've also seen U2 take many risks over the years. But they balance that out by making smart business decisions (although, as I've mentioned, I'm not sure what capacity even they have in determining format for singles. There's a lot of egos and a lot who has the bigger dick politics involved behind the scenes at the record company. Why do you think the industry is in the state its in?
  11. Anyway... we can argue this til we're blue in the face. It is what is. If we get the physical release, then what? I'll bitch about the extended perfecto dance remix as the b-side instead of one of the many tracks that are recorded and didnt make SOI and wont make SOE, and then next guy will defend them and we'll be right back here again...
