1. Yeah that would be breaking news, ultimate surprise, super innovative
  2. But truth is nobody would expect them to do it totally the same way... not innovative, but unexpected yes
  3. I get what you're saying, but... If we're already suggesting/predicting it, it's not unexpected
  4. And they'll play their first single impromptu on the roof of an LA liquor store, because relevance.
  5. My interpretation is they're trying to strive for the greatness and perfection of ATYCLB, not necessarily trying to mirror or model it, no?

As one of the biggest fans of ATYCLB on this site, I think the band trying to model SOE after ATYCLB from a conceptual standpoint is very interesting, but I actually don't think it's their best approach. ATYCLB was successful in large part because Pop was considered to be a failure at the time. I'm sure that'll trigger a lot of people on the site, but the truth hurts and I'm not sorry about it. After two albums of the band speaking from behind costumes and masks of some sort, ATYCLB felt like a breathe of fresh air. I don't know how they can emulate that sort of sensation following SOI, an album and tour that was incredibly successful by any metric. Perhaps Tedder is using the analogy to describe the stark change in direction ATYCLB represents rather than the actual sound itself and I'm pretty sure many people are hoping this is the case.
  6. They've already done the b-side album. Just get all the 45's from Joshua Tree. It doesnt get any better than that body of work...

Because I don't want to be banned from the site, I won't go so far to say they want to strive for the perfection of ATYCLB or that ATYCLB represents perfection at all.

I definitely think they are going for the accessibility of ATYCLB and probably the massive change of direction it represented.

Or like after great and innovative Pop came safe and disappointing ATYCLB - now SOI best album since Pop and now another disappointment from SOE?

Pop was experimental, but whether or not it was great is debatable. Even now I think it's at best average or slightly above average compared to their other albums.
  10. Based on the numbers, Pop was far from great. This is undeniable.
  11. opinion - I just wanted to point out that people can feel it different - and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks Pop is great and ATYCLB was disappointment
Numbers don't say if its good or not...

Numbers can tell you how many units of the album were sold and how many tickets were sold for the tour. While this doesn't explicitly say if an album was good or not, this is a concrete metric that has been shown to be a pretty good correlation of the consumer's general sentiment of a product. Any other metric that can't be quantified would be classified as an opinion, but numbers are hard facts.
