    Same here. Written much more for the American market. Just like 75% of ATYCLB.

    Vertigo is going and has gone backwards from what Native Son was about - hard rock. Now it sounds more pop with a little bit of rock left over. But for the videos of both songs (Beautiful Day to Vertigo), it is hard to choose which is cooler. A Spanish desert revolving around them - or jets flying right overhead.

    1. Beautiful Day vs. City of Blinding Lights (uplifting, softer rock)
    2. Elevation vs. Vertigo (fun, gritty distorted rock)

    I like BD's video more, even though Vertigo is COOL. BD has these silly bits, the way I see it, it shows the band going to that terminal to get to a plane, Bono is with them (with the glasses) and they are pretty serious, but then there is also this other Bono without the glasses (maybe it's supposed to be Bono's soul or his thought) which is wandering around the airport happy, doing silly stuff!

  5. Our national tv-station chose BD as soundtrack for the Olympics in Sydney. Luckily the song doesn't remind me to that happening every time.

    What exactly about Beautiful Day is american?


    Vertigo to me seems like a sell out when compared to Native Son, and is a pretty mindless track to boot, not in a good mindless Pop way either.

  8. Beautiful Day was the song that made me a u2 fan and i think Vertigo is fucking mega.

    Vertigo is immense, but as good as it is, it's just a throwaway rock number, whereas Beautiful Day has a special something about it that sets it apart from other songs.
  10. Beautiful day, for sure. Like many said here, it was the song that really got me into U2, and besides that, it has a special something for me... it has the power to lift up my mood no matter what.
    I didn't like Vertigo, but it grown on me. The thing is I love when Edge rocks out and he does that in Vertigo. But I'll have to agree that compared to Native Son, Vertigo is much more pop.
  11. Beautiful Day is a much better song overall... that being said, I probably enjoy Vertigo more live, except for a select few occasions.
  12. Both are great songs for me, classics of the modern U2 era. As songs, BD has more to it and albums-wise, I prefer it to Vertigo (although I like the finale to Vertigo where the synths come in )

    Live, I liked BD better during Elevation because it was fresh and there seems to be something different about it compared to the Vertigo tour (perfect examples being Slane and Boston DVD performances) - I dunno for sure but it always seems to me that Edge's guitar sounded different... However, Vertigo tour-wise, I'd have to say Vertigo for me, especially when it opened shows; a bit of a throwback to traditional rock'n'roll, and everyone goes nuts. Just check out the Live8 performance, Bono's bursting at the seams!

    (I think the idea of comparing BD with COBL and Vertigo vs. Elevation is probably more apt though )
