1. So the stuff here would only just pass as tolerable? Crikey.

I've had a few conversations with the GD crowd, and they are hellishly snobby about it - considering how taper-friendly the band actually is. You think some of the U2 lossless crowd are finicky about their recordings, the fans of the GD are ten times as bad, and they'll crucify you to the end if you even dare mention MP3 or WMA.

However, I'll be buying a hard-drive based recorder like an iRiver or Sony, which I think are the so-called good brands and I'm going to a fair few shows this year and next year for various bands, and would like to try out my equipment then. By the way, I do have MPEG4 recordings of the Adelaide '06 show and I did upload them the morning after the show (City of Blinding Lights - Sometimes You Can't Make It...) because my battery died but they were so poor with so much distortion. But again, that was my first time ever recording a big band show and it's hard when you're squished in between lots of people and not able to even hardly move (or dance).

I hope my next effort works a bit better...we'll see.

Some other questions for this topic: Now, once you're hooked onto a UHF frequency (this would more than likely be a stadium, as opposed to an arena in Australia), can the sound staff detect someone else recording and lock them out of that frequency or inflict deliberate distortion effects or static? What is the best brand and / or accessories, plus capacity for doing recordings (like the November 18 2006 Melbourne show, or even the other Australian show recordings), which I could pick up for around $AUD250-$300? Also, I'd like to know what a bass-roll off and pre-amp are used for too.

Maybe that's what we could do - set up a U2start recording project where we record different U2 shows (of course depending on whether we've got the right equipment, we know security won't be too tight - there's always ways around it though - and there is actually a show in our area). My recording, if I can at all manage it, will definitely be lossless and then it will be converted to MP3 at 192 or better. No less.

Don't get me wrong. I love the stuff around here. I'm grateful it exists. You hit the nail right on the head with what you said.

I don't think bands have a real problem with it because it doesn't lose them money from something that would never have been released officially anyway.

But there are those that do not like it, openly. Bob Dylan is one from mind.
  5. Phish tape their own shows, then sell 'em. A good way to beat the system, but pricey for the fans.

If the only source I could get was an audience recording, and not a very good recording, I'd pay for a soundboard at a decent price. Unedited.

Also if I remember the Who did the same thing, with the Encore series. I recorded Live at Leeds #2 (2006-06-17), and because it wasnt released I'm keeping it away as well. Plus it was on my birthday, so it has special meaning to me.

My source stunk though.... I'm glad a friend recorded it via comp at home. Only 3 good qual songs though.
