Yes!! My God, they're only on their fourth album...aren't they a bit early in their career to be so depressed already?

    Its a London thing.

Oh yeah. Emerged from his lemon spaceship (may get stuck occassionally) about 100 lightyears ago.

I think that's exactly why I enjoy U2's music so much more than Coldplay's--U2's music, even when it seems depressing, is uplifting and elevating. Always. Even the songs that seem to be depressing or cynical (i.e. Acrobat) always, always have some sort of positive quality to them.

Exactly...U2 is always refreshing...makes you wake up with a smile and fall asleep with another one.

London is beautiful! What could you possibly have to be depressed about? I'd live in Piccadilly Circus if I had the financial means.

I'll take your word for it though.

    Exactly.
  6. You are right...the songs are nice and fun to listen to...but they have no depth, not just because of the music, but also because they have no real good lyrics on them...the lyrics aren't related to each other or even related to themselves...you can't get a full view of what the hell Cemeteries of London is talking about...even Viva La Vida which seems to have the best lyrics has issues...
Then again there are other bands, such as our little foursome here, their lyrics always mean something, always have something to say...there are lines in each song that just stay in your mind (like "A woman needs a man, like a fish needs a bicycle!" ).

Which isn't even a U2 lyric but a ..ehm... borrowed line

I'm still unsure what to think about the new album. Some amazing tunes like Lost!, Violet Hill, Lovers in Japan, some soso stuff.
Viva la vida is a masterpiece, I hardly heard such an atmospheric peace of music by any band in the last 10 years. (somehow it always brings Louis XVI. to my mind...)
The album in it's entirety can't top AROBTTH imho but it's a refreshing step forward.

Chris Martin lost a few people close to him in the last couple of years. Bound to affect you. For someone that recently has been there, it really resonates. Especially 42 and Death and all His Friends.

    I still love it all.

Never knew that, it surely affects you. I know...Makes more sense now. That's why he probably walked away when a BBC-journalist asked if they 'had an obsession for death'.

A Dutch rockmagazine, called Off The Record, had an interview with Coldplay. And even they found some comparisons between them and U2. They called Coldplay the 'artistic shadow of U2'. And more, they compared Lovers in Japan with Streets (same up-tempo) and Viva La Vida as a very U2-ish song.
