Most certainly - best version on the tour by far, from what I've come across. Flawless.

Honestly, The Fly was the best thing to come out of the Elevation Tour. (that and Bad/40 segue into Streets). It was the best rediscovering of a 'classic' since SBS during Popmart. The album version still rates higher IMO but it's the best live rendition by a long way. That slow intro before Edge explodes excite me every time.
  5. Right, now for my review;

2001-07-21 - Torino, Italy - Stadio Delle Alpi

    Sound

Not really too much to say on the sound. My first thoughts were that the 3-star rating was slightly harsh, but in hindsight it's bang on - the band are audible, but to a limited degree. It's nothing like the Adelaide Lovetown show we reviewed recently, it's clear and sharp but Adam's bass isn't very loud and the drums sometimes lose some 'oomph'. The other qualm which I had was the audience - I like my audience recordings on the whole, but on occasions you get ones such as these where the crowd in the viscinity is too audible at times. Now, I'm a fairly liberal kind of guy BUT I really wish that if members of the crowd are going to sing along, SING IN KEY! Such an gripe, although personal on my part, is further aggrivated when said crowd members drown out the band in full swing...examples of this being large parts of Until The End Of The World, New Year's Day, Where The Streets Have No Name, The Fly and With Or Without You.

Other than that, I don't have any issues with it...

    6/10

    Performance

This is one of those shows when the band aren't disinterested (personally, I don't think they ever truly are), but moreso that the crowd are far more in the mood than the guys themselves. The show really takes time to gain some momentum, but once it does I really started to enjoy it. The first few songs are missing that energy, despite the fact that you'd expect the first part of the mainset to do precisely that - get the show on the road, as it were. New York was great, I have to say the more I listen to this song, the more I fall in love with it. It's not your normal fare, but it keeps surprising me with its live qualities. I Will Follow really got the show underway, and Sunday Bloody Sunday was one of the most exhilirating performances I've heard in a long time - Bono's "no more!" speech was just incredible for me; I know we all know he's one for big powerful speeches, but this was up there with the "fuck the revolution!" Denver speech for me. Stuck In A Moment was pretty good, Edge was in his element with his beautiful guitar part. The B-stage set was great fare in my opinion - a really moving version of In A Little While, Desire was great and Stay (Faraway, So Close!) was really on the money for me. Tis a strange thing to think that 2 men and an acoustic can hold the attention of 80,000+ people in one of the largest football stadiums in Europe with voice and strings alone, but my God they did. However, after this, the show started to get lost on the wayside...Bad was, well, rather eponymous in my opinion. I may seem harsh but Bono's voice was fading fast, and he was really straining every sinew to keep on going, and Where The Streets Have No Name suffered similarly. Mysterious Ways and The Fly were pretty good, but suffered from the aforementioned decline of Bono's voice.

The encore was pretty good; a decent version of Bullet The Blue Sky - a great solo from Monsieur L'Edge - followed by a rousing rendition of With Or Without You, although at this point the crowd singing came back to haunt me...Wake Up Deadman was fantastic in my opinion - for some reason, Bono's vocal decline actually made this all the more haunting and emotional, and I actually had tears in my eyes for a bit. Heartbreaking stuff, it really was. Walk On was great, but Pride (In The Name Of Love) wasn't so much. Good fun, but I'm thinking the guys' musicianship jumped ship and popped down the pub for 5 minutes as the song came to its conclusion - it made me grin, but it sure wasn't their finest moment! Out Of Control was good fun, but out of place - such an energetic song is main set fare, preferably in the first 5-6 songs. Such as it is, it fitted the nature of the show - full of promise, but out of sorts.

    6.5/10

    Overall

Well, it's a good show for easy listening, but that's part of the problem - you're not genuinely grabbed by it in anyway until I Will Follow, a good half an hour into the show. The sound is average, but very much listenable. As such, I wouldn't call it a must-have show, nor is it one for someone looking for a really good Elevation tour show on a par with Slane or South Bend BUT it's a good show to fill out your collection. Don't make it a priority, but just sit back and listen (as long as you're not too fussy about off-key crowd singing!)

  6. U2 – Elevation Tour – 2001-07-21 Turin, Italy

    Performance

So we have our first Elevation show with Elevation being the starter in a long time. Elevation rocks off to a great start. Bono not so much. Beautiful Day also suffered from strained vocals. The band is a little late on the Until the End of the World intro, and poor Bono was just so strained with the vocals. New Year’s Day was good, but the concert still hasn’t “elevated” for me. Kite was good, but not as good as what I expected it to be, since the emotional level wasn’t as high as it was after Slane. Gone was alright. I never have dug New York, ever. This concert didn’t change my mind. I Will Follow was the first great song here. Kept the concert alive for me. I must speak my mind and say the pause between IWF and SBS didn’t help. Larry could have started drumming the intro to SBS at the end of I Will Follow. SBS didn’t stand out. In My Life is forgettable, but thanks for me keeping me entertained at the time Bono. Stuck in a Moment was great. Also I haven’t really dug In A Little While, but that’s just me. They did well with it. Desire just doesn’t really work that way. But it was used as a band intro. I liked the intros, but not the song so much. Stay was awesome. Just so intimate and captured the mood. Maybe not the best version, but a highlight for the concert. As for Bad, Bono struggled with the “wide awake” bit. The intro to Streets was alright, but nothing special. Streets was good, not great. MW was ok, but the song just doesn’t work that way. The Fly, one of my favs, played the ultimate way, was not good at all. The intro was too long, and the scream just didn’t work. BTBS was also just iffy. With or Without You wasn’t spectacular either. The backing track gave me a headache. One had its moments, and it was great. Wake Up Dead Man was just as good. Walk On was great, and another highlight for me. The crowd just takes over with Pride. You can’t hear Bono sing the choruses. Quite odd when Larry stopped. Oh well. Then comes the last song, Out of Control. Ok, so Bono fucked up on the first stanza, but whatever. I thought it was still great.

    Audience

My new section of reviewing a boot. Robert Plant once said “so tonight, we're gonna have a really ecstatic one [show], this is co-dependent on two things: us and you.” The audience was really into this one. Just like the Zoo TV Milan gig (1992-05-22), the crowd was so into the show. Listen as they drown out Bono during the choruses of Pride. The crowd made this one pretty good.

    5 of 5 stars

    Sound

I’ve got a headache from this show, mainly from With or Without You. I liked it. For a 3 star show, this is perfect placement for it. Sound wise this is for collectors only.

    3 of 5 stars

    Highlights

I Will Follow – finally, we got a good one!
Stuck in a Moment – Bono comes back vocally
Stay – Very intimate moment of the concert
One – Bono comes back, again
Walk On – this song is always awesome
Out of Control – love how it closes the show, just as they did with the Boy tour.

    Lowlights

New York – I just don’t like the song
In A Little While – never really went anywhere for me
Desire – It just didn’t cut it for me
The Fly – Bono! Why did you try the scream in the intro? Why was the intro so long?

    Overall[

As I said, this is for collectors only. Kareem said it best when he said it was die-hards too. It would seem like the perfect show with such a good setlist, but it isn’t. If Bono was vocally spot on my review would be totally different. All I know is I’ve got a headache, and this gig is for collectors and die-hards.

Not that good. I love Elevation, but this one wasn't really IT. The band wasn't in the mood and it more or less felt like an obligation. Anyway..there were some standouts and for me these were Kite (always love it), The Fly, Out of Control (at the end, just a surprising place), In A Little While and Desire with the snippets. Bono's voice wasn't there either, as mentioned by those before me.

    Sound
Worthy the 3-star rating here. Nothing really special, all instruments were there although the crowd was indeed sometimes a bit irritating. Nothing more to say here.
