I respectfully disagree... fanclub memberships and ticketing have gone hand in hand since Propaganda, as far as U2 is concerned. That said, it is the norm with most bands these days. It is an attempt to get the tickets to the fans and not the brokers, first and foremost.
Paying for the priviledge to get tickets first? Sounds bad at face value but that isn't the whole story.
That said, another GREAT way to combat the brokers is what Bruce Springsteen did on his solo tour a few years ago.
- You used your credit card to buy tickets
- All tickets were will call at the ticket window.
- You had to show your ID and the CC used to buy the tickets to get the tickets.
U2 should consider that idea.
That's a good idea.
