Argh, I like the Elevation version of The Fly but I still prefer the two guitar setup*! I'm not big on covers (although I must say, the team-up with Arcade Fire on the 2nd Montreal show for "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is something else). You want an outstanding US show? 2005-05-28 (Boston). I love that show. In my opinion it's far from a bad tour, I rate it as my favourite lol. I don't get what you mean by not having BD and Miracle Drug in the same show...

Granted, not every show comes across as a special show if you listen to the bootlegs, but judging by the reviews I come across for most of the shows, a lot of people still thought the show they were at was the best thing since sliced bread (www.u2gigs.com - check it

How can they have featured too many songs off of HTDAAB when that's the whole idea of a tour lol? ZooTV = they played everything bar Acrobat on most shows, as with most of Zooropa; JT = each show featured a good proportion of most of the album; Pop = at least 7 of the songs off the album got played every show...

Sorry Steve, I just realised this may seem a bit like pinning you up against a wall, but it's more a case of me being intrigued by your reasoning than anything lol! No hard feelings m'man!

*Just listened to the Torino version, I'm now torn again - the solo is much more ethereal during Elevation, but there still seems to be something missing when you don't have Edge doing his part vs. Bono's rhythm...

Yeah, it got played now and then on the early legs of ZooTV, dunno about Lovetown though...Elevation and Vertigo, it's been dropped down a couple of keys so, to me, it feels like it's lost some energy; generally in the higher keys, Bono would really get hold of the show by the scruff of the neck when SBS was in full flight.

Just make it more fast indeed. Listen to Red Rocks and Slane...world of difference. I must say I like the last leg SBS versions of Vertigo though. Especially 12-04 Saitama, with that kid singing No more!

As for the Vertigo tour.... it just doesn't hit it off with me. Maybe its the album. Every other tour has something, even the Boy tour (which IMO is awesome). To me U2 had little to work with for HTDAAB, unless I am totally wrong. My reasons:

Vertigo: a rock song
Miracle Drug: BD #2, we already have BD which is good enough
SYCMIOYO: very personal..... my fav off the album. Prob the best song off the album
LAPOE: the Vertigo theme song
COBL: another Streets, but this one's a keeper
everything else just doesn't do it for me.

As for SBS it wasnt played at all during Lovetown

Hmmm...I don't see Miracle Drug as BD #2 at all, I think it's much better. BD was definitely a turn of the century song, and of the time, something that really lifted everyone back up on their feet in troubled times. I love SYCMIOYO on the album, but as a live entity, I think it's barely a patch on the original. LAPOE and COBL are definite keepers in my opinion, think they're great - OOTS was great for me too. ABOY, Yahweh and Fast Cars, meh - good songs, but I agree that I won't cry if they're aren't retained in any particular form, although CFYT is a great song that misses something, both live and on the album...

Speed isn't so much the issue, but it's harder to generate energy in a voice when you're digging the words out from the bottom of your lungs. Like I say, my favourite version is the PopMart DVD, and you can't say there's any pace there. It's just Edge really getting into the song, singing his heart out, and it helped that he got the key right.

did people know it was a u2 album leading up to it? i figured they might have not mentioned it and just let people find out after it was released.

I bacame a U2 fan when Wild Horses got released as a single...absolutely loved it....the anticipation of Zooropa (which I believe I bought on tape!!) was big for me but not as big as POP....when i was a fully fledged U2 obsessive! I remember hearing the world exclusive of Discotheque on the radio and being blown away! I just couldnt wait to get my hands on the album!

When passengers came out i was equally looking forward to it....i went out and bought it and thought "what the f*** is this".....i actually thought that it was the end of U2.......how i was wrong! ...but who knows if that was labelled a U2 album it just may have been the end!!

So yeh the anticipation for POP was the strongest for me but this next album is a close second!

I also remember the build up and recording of POP, the band had a webcam in the recording studio, I had just started my first job since university and thus just discovered the internet......suffice to say did not get much work done.

Was funny as I seem to remember the band or someone posting messages on a cardboard cutout of Elvis(?) that was in the studio

As for anticipation, AB was immense with big TV campaigns and I remember hearing The Fly for the first time thinking - holy cow what is this - as it sounded nothing like U2 had done before, lots of reviews at the time said they were washed up, then along came AB and blew everyone away
