    We're hearing lots of buzz about the first single from U2's new album, which is expected to be "Get On Your Boots." Confirming anything has been a challenge today, but here's what we think we know:

    A fan in Boston tell us that WBCN radio announced on-air yesterday that the new U2 single will "hit the airwaves" next week. WBCN is, of course, a longtime U2-friendly radio station.
    But, a good source elsewhere is saying the single won't be on US radio until January 19.
    We do know that US radio stations typically receive new singles on Thursdays or Fridays for airing the following week. So, it sounds like the new single should be out in the next week or two at most. We've got feelers out in a bunch of places, and we'll update this as we hear more.

    On a semi-related note, U2tour.de is reporting that the UK standard version of No Line On The Horizon will include a bonus track. The UK and Japan typically get these bonus tracks. U2tour.de also expects the bonus track will be available on some of the limited editions of the album, too.



    Good news...even it is just more rumors! We are indeed getting close...
  2. Though U2 do seem to love to "rock the cashbox", what are your thoughts on the potential of them doing a free show at Madison Square Garden (THE United States venue to see a U2 show at, says Bono), or even the Point Depot along with the release of an album?

    I mention MSG only because Coldplay did a few free shows there to promote their album and tour, and so did another group/artist, i believe...

    Finally! I need to hear it when it FIRST hits the radio though! I already told some of my teachers I'll be away March 2nd! haha. I'm gonna stay home, and play it over and over on the stereo and just sit there in bliss.

    The beach clips are 99.9% not final mixes. U2 were still mixing and re-mixing tracks when "Q" did their interview in November.

    Zoo Station changed shape in the last week of AB recordings. Listen to the alternate version that was on the "Miss Sarajevo" CD single.

    A Sort of Homecoming had completely different lyric and melody. The morning they were to ship the masters off, Bono wanted one more pass at it. That pass was the album mix.

    So I would not put too much stock in the Beach Clips

    Free show? Not so much. Possible but higly unlikely, except maybe a radio giveaway to get into a dress rehearsal.

    And yes all the hype is worrying, NLOTH will probably not live up to the hype of being their greatest album ever, and gullible fans will be dissapointed (even though they said the exact same thing for the previous two albums).

    Though it's practically guaranteed to be their best album of the 2000s.
    Though I wonder if any of the songs will reach the high point that Beautiful Day did back in 2000.

    Well, the first clip, if it is indeed Unknown Caller, is damn good. If the best songs on the album are other ones -- Moment of Surrender, Breathe, Stand Up, etc. -- then it is going to be great.

    I think if this album is better than the last two it will be a classic, since the last two were pretty close. Can't wait to hear Get On Your Boots without the Mediterranean Sea in the background. Although I think I'm going to go listen to those four clips again on my U2 Ipod...

  9. Let's not pay too much attention to song titles or lyrics until we hear the actual songs. What about Party Girl, Lady With the Spinning Head, Zooropa, Mofo. They are pretty oddball titles and lyrics attached to them. They are all good songs IMO but how would you have reacted if you just saw the song titles before the album's release?
  10. Upstairs, on a green couch at the rear of the room, there's Bono, singing his latest attempt at a lead vocal at the top of his lungs. He rocks back and forth on the couch, as if in epileptic prayer, while he chants the lyrics into a handheld microphone. The words, which he keeps revising, have an almost hip-hop-like cadence: "Stand up, 'cause you can't sit down... Stop helping God across the road like a little old lady... Come on, you people, stand up for your love." The track is powered by a heavy riff that lands between the Beatles' "Come Together" and Led Zep's "Heartbreaker"; the groove is slinkier than anything U2 have done in years.


    That description from the Rolling Stone interview reminds me of the first U2 clip on the Here Is What Is trailer.

    You're right, lyrics are taken out of context when not with the music, if I had read the lyric "Turn it up loud, Captain!" before hearing the Vertigo single I would have been equally worried (but I love that track). I just get the feeling that when people hear a 48 year old singing about 'sexy boots' some will take the piss! This is assuming that the lyrics haven't been changed, I guess we'll know in a week or two.

    Yeah probably, but that's always been part of the appeal of Bono in my view. Always willing to push the boundaries lyrically despite his age and background. Let's not forget that as a cocky 23 year-old he was singing about 'The Troubles' (Sunday Bloody Sunday), celebrated the life of of an American civil rights hero as a 24-25 year-old Irishman (MLK/Pride), and was still performing songs he wrote as an 18-20 year-old last tour when he was 45 (I Will Follow/The Ocean/An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart/Electric Co.). He's never felt that he's too young to 'make a statement' or too old to still 'be cool'.

    He's always been able to transcend people's pre-conceived views about who/what U2 should be singing about and how they should sound and he can do it again.
