1. 60% of listners on Belfasts biggest radio station don't like it. There won't be many press reviews until the song is actually released

It basically got trashed over here, but its not the worst thing that ever happened
Their is an album to come as well, some of these ppl/press seems to think the judgement day arrived lol

I seen two so far, from two of Sweden´s biggest newspapers, and they basically "hate" the single
Meanwhile I dont think its their greatest song by far, its not THAT bad lke one of the journalist put it "general crap"
I may be young, but the whole sexy boots line is not "sexy" in my ears, at least not for men in their age to be singin about
I just hope that "stronger songs" will surface
Its a grower tough, I think it requirs some time
But I also understand ppl that don´t like the song
Its an ok song, not great
Im still very confident that we haven´t seen all, the best is yet to come
Their for I wonder, why they put this song out as first single, to promote the album?
I can only speak from what I heard from the "beach clips" and like I stated then, I state now
This were the weakest of the 4 clips

I agree, and you know what fuck it, Breathe (2nd beach clip), is one best (U2) songs i've heard in a looong time, why couldn't that song be their first single?!

Now on topic, i've listened to the song for about 50 times, and during the bridge, why does Larry play with a CLOSED hi hat!? It's just counter intuitive, that bridge would sound so much better if his hi hat was a bit more open.

I think the closed hi hat brings a nice tightness to that breakdown, but i see what you mean about having it open, would just make it a bit more sloshy, which maybe he'll do live? I think it's the best part of the song and one of the most exciting moments in the U2 canon
  5. In France GOYB is loved and hated in the same time !!!
Personnaly I LOVE THIS SONG !!!
  6. this topic is for reviews, not discussion. Use the other topic for anything other than reviews
  7. Someone said Bono is a bit too high - I definitely agree. It's a grower, and let's keep in mind that it was the weakest of the beach clips - as someone pointed out too.
  8. A review, found on the net somewhere, with some truth in it, I think:

Upon first listens, the song is quite a traditional rock tune in line with the kind of song that appeared on How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. The song is stripped of any large rock histrionics in favour of some treated drums and is certainly a less dramatic affair than recent material.

  9. The 1st time I heard it it was like a big wake-up call. Then I didn't like it because I actually thought it seemed to easy for them and there is no actual solo. HOWEVER, after a few listens it sounded more layered and AWESOME! I love the mix of acoustic and digital drums & percussion. The chorus and I guess the Middle Eastern sounding bridge (which is like a 2nd chorus) is pretty wild. And then there's the Drum Breakdown at the end that is a wonderful surprise. NICE HARMONIES by Edge.

4 things really make this song for me: 1) Bono sounds in very good voice! He's not pushing it sounds natural and easy and yet it's kind of high in his range. 2) The drum layering. 3) The riff is infectious & hypnotic & love that Adam and Edge get to both play it simultaneously. 4) THE PRODUCTION: It sounds so 'in your face' It Rocks and yet it's like modern R&B, and Electro-ish. It's very clear and everything can be heard. It keeps the rock edge with the guitar and acoustic rock drums and marries that with the electronic elements. It sounds new, fresh, and natural.

Overall it's kind of a new direction with a combo of Achtung Baby (The Fly/Mysterious Ways), Vertigo/Fast Cars, & Pop. It's not strikingly different but it grabs you and it's inventive enough. I think there will be material that is an expansion of this idea & also a few songs that are more experimental. I don't think U2 have really used a guitar riff to this extent to basically carry the song. Lol, I can just see/hear this on that Guitar Hero Video game! I do like this more modern production. I didn't think I would. Eno/Lanois/Lillywhite did a stellar job here! It's a really fun Dance-Rock track w/a great groove & message.
  10. Oh, sorry, Lastly- I am happy that not everyone likes this song! That would mean it's too easy. And, I can't stand when everyone agrees because that's usually a sign of dumbed down, fast-food music. No, i like it bitter and strong. This song takes a direction. Love or hate it. Out of the 60% who supposedly hate it...probably 40% will change their minds.

I don't think this is a classic...who knows? But it gets attention for sure. And it leaves you wanting more. It's a great starter and I think it will do for this album what 'The Fly' did for Achtung Baby.
