Myself, I find it experimental, different, and mediocre (3/5). Seeing as this is in fact the lead single of the album, I'm very disappointed. All I hope is that the rest of the album will be a lot better, while all I fear is that we're facing a new October (quality-wise – not musically).

by the way i think october is a good album, there are some good pure rock song over there.

Gloria, I Fall Down, I Threw A Rock..., Is That All?
    All beautiful.
    But that's slightly OT...

I don't see why this is a weak single It became #1 in Ireland after a few days and it was Song Of The Week on most radiostations here...and that BEFORE the physical release and the videoclip...
  3. Who cares if it hits #1 or #1873?

  4. The U2 Management

I don't, but one of the main reasons to release a good single is that it ranks as high as possible, which leads to loads of airplay, which leads to more sold albums...
And if GOYB ranks high, gets a lot of airplay, then it's a good single, right?

Whether it's a good song, that's an other discussion...

  5. The occurrence of knee(s) and kneel(s) in U2's lyrics:

    Please:

    "Please...please...please...
Get up off your knees, now"

    Falling at your Feet:

"Every one who needs a friend
Every life that has no end
Every knee not ready to bend
Is falling, falling at your feet"

Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me:

"They want you to be Jesus
They'll go down on one knee
But they'll want their money back
    If you're alive at thirty-three"

    Zoo Station:

"In the cool of the night, in the warmth of the breeze
I'll be crawling around, on my hands and knees"

    Mysterious Ways:

    "To touch is to heal
    To hurt is to steal
If you want to kiss the sky
Better learn how to kneel (...on your knees boy!)"

    Love and Peace or Else:

"I don't know if I can make/take it, I'm not easy on my knees
Here's my heart, you can break it
I need some release, release, release
    We need love and peace."

    Big Girls Are Best:

"As long as the night is coloured blue and black
    Oh yeah yeah yeah
As long as you're on your knees and she's not on her back
    Oh yeah yeah yeah"

    Window in the Skies:

    "Love makes strange enemies
Makes love where love may please
    Soul in its striptease
    Hate brought to its knees"

    Elvis Ate America:

"Elvis... with God on his knees
    Elvis... owned three TVs
    Here come the killer bees
Head full of honey potato chips and cheese"

    Vertigo:

"Lights go down, and all I know
Is that you give me something
I can feel your love teaching me how
Your love is teaching me how
    How to kneel, kneel"

    City of Blinding Lights:

    "The more you know
    The less you feel
    Some pray for, others steal
Blessings not just for the ones who kneel, luckily"

    Smile:

    "You are my abbot
I need the ground to kneel upon
And love can't be your song
I don't want to see you smile"

When I Look at the World:

"When you look at the world
What is it that you see
People find all kinds of things
That bring them to their knees"

    Wave of Sorrow:

"Souls bent over without a breeze
    Blankets on burning trees
    I'm sick without disease
    Nobility on it's knees"

    In a Little While:

    "In a little while
I won't be blown by every breeze
    Friday night running
    To Sunday on my knees"

    Desert of our Love:

"Go in the door, door feel me
    Go inside, kneel down
I feel love in the song
    Chorus"

    Original of the Species:

"And you feel like no one before
You steal right under my door
I kneel 'cause I want you some more
I want the lot of what you got
And I want nothing that you're not"

Also: It might interest you to know that there are no songs prior to Achtung Baby containing the lyrics knee(s)/kneel(s).

At last one thinks as me

i think that no.1 spot even if all the fans don't agree is still an indication that it's a good song from not

Of course the band and the management will care. I was just reflecting from my position as a fan.

Besides, U2 has never been a "Single-band", so even a "weak" single won't lead to poor album sales.

    Okay

And that's true, right now the album will be bought a lot anyway, because everyone knows U2. But I for instance, became fan because of Vertigo, COBL, OOTS > the HTDAAB-singles. You probably became fan with HMTMKMKM, Discotheque, Please and LNOE > the Pop era? Loads of others became fan due Streets, ISHFWILF and WOWY. And GOYB is one of the next songs that needs to 'create' fans. And it needs airplay to do so...
  10. Still, choosing Get on your Boots as a lead single is suicide.

all great lyrics, it's a great spiritual thing to play with in writing, something very poetical about kneeling, as Bono shows, bravo to him
