Nothing has been added. I ripped the audio from chrismcmanus's HD video and mastered it properly, that's all. The audience may have responded to the mastering process, especially to decompressing the mid frequencies.
  2. No, audience is the same from the HD-video ripp-off. Still a nice improvement, thanks!

    Edit: Oh, nevermind.
  3. Just listened to the MP3, Bono's sounding like he's running out of breath and strained, the vocals after the first verse lack any power at all. Drums are nowhere near loud enough either, they should be at the forefront of the mix.

I hope this is not an indicator of how his voice has degraded recently (ie. VDL performance, Nelson Mandela thing), and that good production is masking it on the album.

Listen to the previews, some bits are really bad vocally. The vocals on White As Snow are really bad, Bono's voice indeed doesn't seem to get better, only worse.

Yeah, he should really give up smoking. Just take a look at what happened to Axl Rose, and Bono has too much vocal talent to see it go down the drain like this. And peope who say its age, it isn't that big a factor, just listen to what Pavarotti could do in his sixties.

Bono hasn't the best voice ever from his own, so he should pay more attention to it to keep it from going worse. The potential is high, but Bono can't reach that potention and I'm a little worried for the tour. And the album too, the ballads for example.
  7. Bono's voice is shot since fifteen years now. It always surprises me when people expect his voice to recover after hearing it getting worse day by day since the mid nineties. I think it's a brave thing to sing this high on GOYB and it sounds nice to me on the studio version, but it won't be a pleasure to listen to the song live, especially not after ten days touring.
I wouldn't know if the smoking is to blame. I'd say his voice has suffered the most from lack of technique.

  8. Nah it's not technique so much, definitely the smoking is a major factor

Singers who smoke have a harsh breathy voice and a loss of clarity in their upper range.
Smoking also reduces normal breathing capacity. The decrease in air flow due to bronchial constriction impairs vocal performance, and such organic changes to the respiratory tract cannot be overcome by heroic singing technique alone! Smokers cannot expect to produce a clear ringing pianissimo that will reach the far corners of a hall.

  9. His voice on the Mandela thing was the best we've hreard from him in years. Silky smooth, good highs and just nice all around. I can't see his voice holding up for a whole tour, especially singing songs as high as Boots.

  10. I was listening to that with a few people behind me, we all agreed it was the worst thing we heard from Bono in a while. Horrible singing. But maybe it's just me.
  11. Funny to see the chief and the cooled-down fan/moderator go offtopic. But on White Snow it wasn't that bad I think. The song is very slow itself. Ah, let's wait until you hear the full record.

And Happy Birthday wasn't horrible, but it was not perfect too.
  12. Watched it on TV last night and I think that U2 were second best, performance wise (although I'll admit ti detesting rap so they were automatically discounted).

The mix let them down a lot, but they just looked like seasoned pros kicking it. And no flouncy nonsense from Bono, just kick into it.

Coldplay were trying too hard and the Jay-Z bit was embarrassing.

Radiohead kicked arse though. My word.
