  5. U2, as the band was later known, formed on September 25, 1976.

Larry Mullen Jr (drummer) put a notice in the Mount Temple Comprehensive School at 14 years of age in 1976. Seven boys responded: Larry Mullen Jr (drums), Paul Hewson (Bono, lead vocals), Dave Evans (The Edge, guitar) his brother Dik Evans (guitar), Adam Clayton (bass) and Ivan McCormick and Peter Martin. It took place in Larry Mullen's kitchen.

U2's first demo tape was recorded at Keystone Studios in Harcourt Street, Dublin in April 1978.

Paul McGuiness, U2's current manager to present became their manager in May 1978.

On Saint Patrick's Day in 1978, U2 won a talent contest in Limerick, Ireland with £500 as first prize and funding to record a demo.

Peter Martin did not return after the first practice, and Ivan McCormick left the group within a few weeks.

Steve Averill originally suggested six names for the band to choose from, and they chose U2 because it was the one they disliked the most.

A farewell concert took place in The Presbyterian Church Hall in Howth sometime in 1978, with The Hype (as they were known) playing covers for the departing Dik Evans at The Presbyterian Church Hall in Howth. The remaining four members changed their name, mid-show to U2, playing original material.

Their first EP was Three with Out of Control, Stories For Boys and Boy / Girl. It was released in Ireland only in September 1979. U2 later played London for their first shows outside of Ireland in December 1979 but didn't get much notice or attention by the audiences or critics.

Island Records signed U2 in March, 1980; 11 O'Clock Tick Tock was their first internationally-released single. Their second single released in Ireland only, Another Day was released on the CBS label, following Three.

U2 released Boy, under Island Records in October 1980, produced by Steve Lillywhite to excellent reviews. Boy remains the only album where all songs have been played live.
