    (1) NLOTH, Magnificent, Moment of Surrender, Unknown Caller -- these songs all deal with moments of personal epiphany, turning points in the lives of individuals that give them an expanded view of the world, a view of the world beyond their own limited experience. The theme is "vision over visibility," and the moral imperative to "escape yourself and gravity," as Bono says in MOS and UC. In NLOTH, the cop wants to flee (the scene of an accident?), Magnificent deals with the experience of grace, MOS with some kind of personal breakdown that leads to surrender, and Unknown Caller is some sort of weird epiphany that occurs "between the midnight and the dawning." All these songs deal with the theme of liminality, of transition and personal transformation.

    (2) Crazy Tonight, GOYB, Stand Up -- these songs are all calls to action, the consequences of the epiphanies/conversions in the first section of the album. The "change of heart" mentioned in Crazy Tonight leads to the urge to "get on your boots," "stand up" and try to change the world.

    (3) FEZ--Being Born, White As Snow, Breathe, Cedars of Lebanon -- these songs all deal with the aftermath of action, the danger and exhilaration of leaving behind one's old horizon and discovering new ones. Hence, the setting appears to be places outside the Western world, Morocco, Afghanistan, China (?) and Lebanon.

The concept that runs through the album is, as the album title suggest, that "there is no line on the horizon." And so we need, as people living in the Western world, to expand our vision to include the rest of the planet. No coincidence that the album starts in Paris and ends in Lebanon.

It does sort of feel like the story that is being told through the songs is unfinished. What happens after "Lebanon?" Where does the pilgrimage go from here. I think it would be great if U2 released a "No Line On The Horizon Vol. II" later in the year, maybe with the alternate version of NLOTH, Tripoli, Every Breaking Wave, a reworked Mercy, Winter, and more...

Great food for thought, thank you.
  2. Ok so i have a pretty dumb question to ask. When the album comes out in stores, is it gonna be better quality on iTunes if i burn it or keep these songs that are at 256 kbps??? Whats better a CD rip or a 256 download?

Depends on which program you rip it with (EAC is considered the best one, I believe), and the quality you rip it with. If you decide to rip in lossless, you'll have by far superior sound quality, same as cd, but you'll also have much bigger files. If you decide to rip in lossy (mp3) you can set the bitrate as you wish: higher or lower than 256 kbps, and therefore determine if you want higher or lower quality than itunes files.

Thats a great point Stu, i was thinking that as i made my original point, like the vertigo tour was a great tour that really came across well live and was one of their finest tours, but for me, while the songs still came across live excellently, the quality of the songs wasn't quite the same. But i had the exact thought that you did and it's a tough one that does make for an interesting debate

Pop is also considered by many as one of their favourite U2 albums, yet the songs didn't stand the test in time on the live stage, Zooropa also.

You can definatly have a great album that perhaps doesn't take to the live stage, and a decent album that kicks ass live, if you have both, i guess thats a massive bonus.

Boy, October & War to me are under produced, very raw as albums, yet kick ass live, UF is the opposite, JT is both, Achtung the same as JT, Zooropa & Pop are just albums, not for the live stage, ATYCLB & HTDAAB are both good albums that took to the live stage very well.

I get the feeling Horizon will repeat JT & Achtung.

  7. A break down of sonmgs off the new album i think will hit the stage pretty hard, be awesome live songs as well as studio tracks:

No Line On the Horizon - kick ass, has the energy to really move along

Magnificent - see Streets & Blinding lights, is a monty to be a live favourite

Moment Of Surrender - i think will have the same passion on stage as the likes of One & WOWY

Unknown Caller - could fit into the last 3 or 4 songs in a set, not an instant live song, unkown at this stage

Crazy Tonight - can't wait to hear this one live, could even be an accoustic version

Boots - we have seen it already live

Stand Up Comedy - was made for the live stage

Fez/Being Born - Can't see thos hitting the live stage, more of a studio song

White As Snow - definatly live

Breathe - we saw the version done in France, it's going to rock hard!

Cedars - Perfect closing track for a live set
  8. ok i'm back and i'm back for good, fuck college, fuck acting and political studies March belongs to U2 and my Greek Theatre teacher who worked JT through ZooTV. We talked about the new album today, and he's as pumped as I am. Says he's writing a letter to Bono soon, will keep you all updated.

I still haven't heard it but heard breathe live today (couldn't resist).

    Oh lord i was right.

Do you remember i said that quote right when i joined, i said in 2002 (the album after the next album will be their best album.)

    Prophecy motherfuckers.
  9. i didn't get it, is there going to be a uk bouns track?
  10. I don't agree. I really really expect they don't dare to play it live. All that magic on the song would go out

  11. To me, it;s just that perfect downbeat breathe out relax kind of song that will polish off a night just perfectly, a similar effect to Wake Up Dead Man & Can't Help Falling In Love.

We'll just have to wait and see though, but thats my tip for the ending track.
