  1. Interesting. I've played the album several times, and the more I listen to it, the MORE I like it. I can tell I'm to go be enraptured by it.

    Perhaps we are being too harsh with U2, trying to compare everything they do against The Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby. When I first listened to the new album, I felt a bit perplexed by Bono's wailing. Now I am thoroughly enjoying it, realizing that no othetr vocalist has that "Bono" sound. Perhaps he isn't the greatest singer in the world. Still, he has a hefty range and everything he sings is loaded with passion and yearning.

    Initially, I felt "Moment of Surrender" was too long and it needed a more consistent chorus. However, after having listened to it several times, its length feels just right. Each verse is important in the transitions which are taking place in the man's life. All of it leads up to an epiphany of some kind, wherein he walks through the stations of the cross (i.e., faith, belief, awareness, etc.), ignored by and ignoring the passersby (not noticing anything but what he is focusing on in that moment), finally surrendering completely as visibility (human sight) gives way to vision (a deeper, spiritual sight). Then comes the exultation in Bono's beautiful wailing near the end. If you are a musician, you'll realize how ingenious that last section is: His vocals are juxtaposed against an ongoing transition of chords--amazing!

  2. I've been a U2 fan for 22 years since The Joshua Tree and I've never had to skip tracks before. This is a really bad album but not quite as bad as Zooropa!!!


  3. Equally backward-glancing and derivative of past work, but at least it's consistent.

    Zooropa bad? Next to No Line, it's a progressive and inspired masterclass from a band at the top of their game creatively, with no lumped-in commercial compromises.

    I actually like Zooropa A LOT, though I very well understand it's not the prized child of the bunch for most people.

    Out of curiosity, which tracks are you skipping? Maybe we can get to the bottom of this and solve this problem.
  6. I seem to have forgotten that it is a 'whole album' im into the habit of making playlists on iTunes and only take the best. Im addicted to the title track, Fez/Being Born (IT GREW ON ME AT LAST!) and Winter. Magnificent is dying out and Unknown Caller is rising on my list. this album is good i think because it has different mood with different songs.
  7. I don't know if 'disappointed' is the right word but I don't totally love it and there are definitly tracks I skip. But I can think of very very few albums that I don't skip a track or two. For me, on this one, it's MOS and the Snow one (see, I don't even know its name!). I don't love Stand Up Comedy - a little too whiteboy funk for me (makes me a little embarassed for them - makes them look 'old').

    And when ATYCLB and HTDAAB came out I listened to it non-stop for weeks but with this one it's already sort of taken a back burner to some of my other faves (with the exception of Breathe - I listen to that song almost every day, sometimes multiple times).

    Your post leaves me puzzled.

    If Zooropa was even worse than NLOTH, and you skip tracks on NLOTH... then why didn't you have to skip tracks on Zooropa if it was even worse?

  9. Had my first 'wow this is good'-moment yesterday. The album keeps growing, even SUC. I still skip Boots though.

    I skip Boots as well. It just doesn't sit well on the album. And I'm so pissed off at them for releasing it as a single. I really did not like the album at first, but it has grown on me. Apart from Boots.

    i like it much more than the atom bomb
    u cant expect to have the same feelings u did when u first heard their old stuff
    but i still rate this album

  12. Yeah, there are a few skippable tracks on this album.

    It really is a mish-mash of an album, not very cohesive unlike JT or even HTDAAB.

    Lots of different styles and variety, not all are done equally well though.
