  4. I am kida frustrated... it seems like the SoA idea isn´t very fixed in their minds... They seem to be unable to choose what they´ll take further. It looks like they have 6 tracks form Rick Rubin sessions very guitar driven and straight forward, 12 that are unfinished from NLOTH sessions and the Spiderman album.

    I wouldn´t like a Spiderman album, it would definely be a low for me. IMO they should work on the left overs from NLOTH and release an EP or LP in 2011-12 with Rick Rubin Material.

    Also, they said that it would be this reflective, sufi singing relaxed album, which would be amazing, a big step forward in terms of challenging themselves once again. Now they are confused where they´ll invest their time and money and have frequenty been saying that they were disappointed with NLOTH sales and singles and they wanna have 4 good pop songs for charts (I don´t know why I always imagine a bunch of Crazy Tonights).

    I don´t like their posture now. They are totally against their antimainstream position in the 90´s and seem to care so much about albums sales and being the biggest and best band in the world that they seem like a money machine. They were the best band in the 90´s too! They should send charts to hell like in Zooropa! NLOTH seemed to be taking them somewhere new and it sold below their standards just like POP and will lead them to the safe good little tunes again and will keep them away from the magic experimentalism.... which makes me sad... great creativity minds being thrown away.

    Sorry, I got a little carried away. I just don´t want them to b known only for great popish rock tunes... I want them to be known ALSO for their obscure material such as Kingdoom and Zooropa and their variety of styles.

    Any band these days would love to sell a million records, but for U2, that high number is not enough. The multi-platinum rockers told the Associated Press that they're displeased with the sales of their latest album, 'No Line on the Horizon.' Recent U2 albums have been selling in the three to four million range, while 'No Line' has only broken the million mark. Bono and company see factors such as the lack of a hit song and the fickle public's need for a "diet of pop" are contributing to this so-called slump.

    "We weren't really in that mindset," Bono said about the lack of a commercial hit from 'No Line.' "We felt that the album was a kind of an almost extinct species, and we should approach it in totality and create a mood and a feeling, and a beginning, middle and an end. And I suppose we've made a work that is a bit challenging."

    "The commercial challenges have to be confronted," bassist Adam Clayton said. "But I think, in a sense, the more interesting challenge is, 'What is rock 'n' roll in this changing world?' Because, to some extent, the concept of the music fan -- the concept of the person who buys music and listens to music for the pleasure of music itself -- is an outdated idea."

    That said, this isn't the first time that U2 is failing their own high expectations. Remember the group's 1997 album 'Pop'? Widely considered the group's worst album, that too failed to yield a mega-commercial hit that they had achieved with 'The Joshua Tree' and 'Achtung Baby.' That Bono says the new material is more challenging is indicative of this facet, but still, the band continues to try and reach new audiences with a recent partnership with BlackBerry and an appearance on 'Saturday Night Live.' So they're not giving up hope.

    All of this said, U2 probably doesn't have much to worry about. They're currently enjoying record-setting numbers for their '360 Tour' and have an ace up their sleeve -- next week will mark the release of the deluxe version of 1984's 'The Unforgettable Fire,' which featured a little song everyone might have heard of called 'Pride (In the Name of Love).'

I know it wouldn't suit their purposes, since the sales for NLOTH were down so much, and the 360° Tour isnt making that much money, but I read an article in RS that was talking about the new trend being releasing these "experimental" albums that artists are toying with for free via the internet.

    I would gladly pay for it, even if free was an option- they deserve my money as far as I'm concerned- but do you think U2 would ever go there with SoA?

    My bet is on "no".

    a huge fat NO I reckon. Doesn't seem up Pauls street to give stuff away free. Songs Of Ascent will be interesting. I can only see 2 outcomes though. It either gets released and gets slaughtered by the general public and flops (but is loved and respected by the more 'die hard fans), or it never gets released.

    Funny you mention that...I think a lot of their albums' enjoyment comes from following the progress. I read article after article, review after review, and listened to beach clip after beach clip in anticipation of NLOTH. I had ideas in my head of what the songs would sound like before I heard them, and when it got released, I was COMPLETELY wrong in absolutely every regard. I thought the album was 3/5 stars for about a week, and then everything clicked for me. The birds in the beginning of Unknown Caller helped me see that this was exactly what I'd been waiting for.

    People who just pick the album up on the drop date, because they heard about it, probably wouldn't like it as much as the people who track the progress. It's so much more than just an album. It's an entire process that can be heard in 11 tracks. An evolution.

    The next Zooropa? I hope not. I hope it has the same REASONING as Zooropa, in the manner its released. But I hope it's the next great album.

    Had exactly the same thing.

    rreally hope SOA will push their limits and will be slaughtered by the mainstream people. Good for them.


  10. Agree with your point about the album being a grower.

    The thing about Zooropa that people tend to overlook is that even though it was so great and experimental, it was still a commercial success, it sold around 8 million albums worldwide
  11. I really think there is some way that the boys can mix up this new CD. Have a few rock/pop standards as well as the experimental stuff.
  12. We are never going to see a new Zooropa or even Pop out of them.

    They're nowhere near as adventurous these days, now that they have a lot to lose
