But thats only the release thing. If you look at the shows, U2 is the best

    And Vertigo

anyway, the decade actually belongs to Simon Cowell, sadly
  2. THE band of the last five years is Arctic Monkeys, but looking at the whole decade, the title probably goes to Coldplay.

  3. Elevation too, COBL and SYCMIOYO also did well.

This just reminds me how much of a total flop NLOTH was on the radio and single charts.

But definitely I think Coldplay is band of the decade especially after VLV, I wonder if their next album will top it.

yea the whole not getting any great singles thing pisse me off too.

  5. They better write ONE good one for Songs of Ascent
  6. ...but Radiohead has the critcally acclaimed Kid A, (to a lesser extent) Amnesiac, and In Rainbows. I won't include Hail to the Thief.

I think U2 has had a ton of great singles this decade but I don't any of their albums would be considered to be ground breaking. That being said, all three are great listens,,,and some decent "b-sides" too!

Radiohead are definitely the most critically acclaimed band of the last decade, they've been the critics darlings since The Bends.

But their 00s stuff simply is too weird (unlike The Bends, OK Computer) to call them band of the decade
  8. I don't think any band has been a band of the decade. I don't even think you can say U2 was the band of the 80's or 90's. There's just too many bands that were around at the same time. It may seem like to us they were the band oft he 80's or 90's, but truthfully, there was the Police, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden and tons of other bands in the 80's that people thought were huge, and in the 90's there was the grunge scene, and rap began to make it's way onto the scene. There can't be a band of a decade. Maybe for a year, but not even.

I think U2 could be called band of the 80s. Even Rolling Stone declared them band of the 80s in 1985 and that was BEFORE the Joshua Tree and Rattle & Hum.
  10. I dunno. I think if you did a survey asking 100 people (obviously who were around in the 80's and were old enough in the 80's to know up from down) what they think the band oft he 80's was, you wouldn't find hte majority of them saying U2. I could be wrong, but I'm just saying, no band has the majority of the world as fans, therefore cannot be called the band of a decade by enough people to make it justifiable.

that was even before the end of the decade, so what is it worth?

How important is this question at all? U2 fans probably will find U2 band of this decade, like Radiohead fans will vote for Radiohead, so be it...

More important is that U2 keeps on recording new albums

  12. That's the point, even before the decade was over the biggest music magazine hailed them as band of the 80s. Excellent foresight on Rolling Stone's part.

This is a good point too:

U2 has now been good longer than any other important band in history. The Rolling Stones have been around forever, but their creative period lasted only 15 years. The Beatles imploded after a decade. U2—the same lineup of Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen—has been making acclaimed albums since 1980's Boy.

And that was only in 2002 http://www.slate.com/id/2061087/

And as for band of the 80s, it seems to be basically U2 vs REM and this article addresses that too

Probably, but most people are idiots, if you did a similar survey asking for who was the band of the 90s. You can bet Backstreet Boys would beat out Radiohead.
There has to be a balance between popularity, critical acclaim and the legacy of the songs from the era. Such criteria would see U2 easily come out on top as band of the 80s.
