I meant to say that nuclear weapons have the power to wipe out life tout court - not just human life - from earth. To be sure, we wouldn't physically destroy the planet, and we probably can't. But then we're just interested in different things. Destroying or endangering life is enough cause of concern for me. I'm quite ready to concede that in 1.000.000 years whether we push the red button now - or whether we seriously compromise our environment now in other ways - won't make a difference. But again, I think our lives and our quality of life, and especially the lives and the quality of life of the future generations, are worth taking care of.
