The DJ said something about a new album and the qualifier being one of the first people to hear the new songs live. Are they just assuming cause there is a tour there will be a new album?

Yeah he probably thinks No Line is a brand-new record.
I'm sure he's read an article somewhere - taking out of context the one where Edge says they'd like to play new songs on the road. Whether that was from a new record or just playing songs they've never played before (ZOMFG, Always Forever Now is a new U2 song!!!) is another question entirely.

That's what I thought. Because of this site I usually know any U2 news before anyone else but I thought maybe I had missed something and that there would be an announcement when I came back online.

You know what would be really cool? If U2 followed Prince's lead on Around The World In A Day.
No publicity, no single until a month after the release of the album, no videos at all, nothing - don't make a fuss over it, just put it out as is. But with leaks and U2's tendency to whore up as much publicity as possible - I wonder if they ever had faith in the album, but they had to get something out substantial after five years to make them look still relevant, it's just not gonna happen.
Hell, even a Honkin' On Bobo would be more than welcome. The idea behind HOB is cool where the songs are played live, and just going with whatever they come out with - in HOB's case, it was cover versions - and it had Jack Douglas producing - U2 need him to get some real fucking rock and roll unlike nothing ever before - I'd love to hear U2's cover of something like Eyesight To The Blind. The cover versions on HOB were spontaneous and just whatever they thought was good blues - and it's a damn fine album, highly recommended for fans of straight-up blues.
If it's some ten-minute epic, then why not - in fact, have two or three, and some short films too! Front-load the album with a seven-minute track, put some shorter five or six minute ones on there, then the rest to be six to ten minutes each with some kind of odd industrial track at the end. So it could look something like this:
New Song 01: 7:00
New Song 02: 15:00
New Song 03: 6:00
New Song 04: 10:00
New Song 05: 12:00
New Song 06: 9:00
New Song 07: 20:00
New Song 08: 1:00
80 minutes right there. You can't tell me that wouldn't be an epic album. Jim Steinman...only he writes shit like that, and it's the best shit of its time.
I can dream, right? I put links in this post to show what a long track really is, and how good a long track can actually be.

When you're talking about 15 and 20 minute songs on an album, you're also talking about Pink Floyd as well. I don't think that would suit U2 tbh

Sure it would. 30 seconds of Bono and 19:30 of instrumentation. 1:00 can be the Cedars Of Lebanon-type track.
Moment Of Surrender was just too short. It needed to be at least twice as long.

really? I think MoS was and is perfect. Unknown Caller should have been one or two verses longer.

Unknown Caller is interesting too except for the 'restart and reboot, move to trash' bits. That should have been taken out, or at least the trash part.

In a video shot in Fez they sing, together with Eno, 'restart and forgive yourself, come back to me'
