I don't think they're that perfectionist anymore - more like indecisive.
They were probably more perfectionist in the late 80s, 90s which is what made the JT and AB what they are - well at least for Bono anyway, his songwriting has definitely gotten lazier over time - his lyrics are much cheesier now or just plain silly now - it started around the ATYCLB era which gave us poetic gems like Elevation. I blame it on the 'back to basics' push, which they basically resulted in them as being musically lazy and not trying to push new ground anymore (the massive success this has had for them hasn't helped either).
While NLOTH was better, it's hard to completely break free from the last decade or so of bad habits which is why we have cringeworthy lyrics in songs like GOYB, SUC, MOS, UC etc.

+1, as much as I've loved U2's past few albums (maybe not NLOTH as much, but the new songs sound promising) Bono doesn't write lyrics like he used to anymore. We don't have songs with lyrics like still haven't found, bad, with or without you, pride, homecoming etc. I think the UF/JT era was my favourite, and lyrics were a large part of that. (Although AB and Zooropa are astoundingly poetic, even those jsut aren't the same).

As you all know 360 tour started on friday. Of course I was at the concert and I don't want to write too much about it because all of us know how the show was going on. I want to tell you what happend day after the concert in Eze. After the Torino show I went to French Riviera. After 3 pm (yesterday) I went to Bono house in Eze. I assumed they gonna be there, as all we know - U2 always spend holidays there. So the whole band were there with families, also Guggi,Gavin Friday,Paul, and others ( did not recognize them). In the evening there was a "Edge Birthday Party", a lot of guest there. What is very interesting - during the party from the house of Bono I heared at least 10 new songs, some from spiderman project some I guess not, I couldn't record it because the bodyguards were everywhere, some songs were very "U2 style". So - you can see Bono picture from Eze here, also the setlist from Torino and Bono picture from Nicea airport.

Nowadays, that's nothing. But some years ago, there were a "type" of song that was very U2-ish. Haven't you heard "This sounds a lot like U2!!!" ever?
August 10, 2010: In a video posted in the U2.com members' section, Adam Clayton says U2 may put out an EP of new material:
"We're kind of trying to break it up a bit. You know, the idea of doing another big record and going away for a long time doesn't appeal to us. But the idea of putting out tracks in the show and seeing what happens to them, maybe putting out a little EP at some point -- these are all possibilities we're thinking about."
The comments were made on August 6, a few hours before U2's concert in Turin.
