1. I could go for an album with a tracklisting of

    1. Return of the stingray guitar
    2. Glastonbury
    3. Every Breaking Wave

Sounds good in my mind. Ballsy start with a kick ass instrumental into a pretty good rock tune. Then the best song takes the all important 3rd spot on the album
  2. instead of 'a few fractions along the way' I hear 'A few distractions along the way'. @glasto
  3. What is puzzeling me is:
I thought EBW was finished, because it was supposed to be included on the NLOTH album, wasn't it? And now they play it accoustically? Isn't it a bit lazy to underrehearse new songs?

the "news"section on U2.com makes the confusion even bigger (as usual...) :

'Like every breaking wave on the shore, this is as far as I can reach…' A beautiful acoustic number, evidently still a work in progress, with Bono saying to Edge as they jammed towards the end, 'break down the chords to the middle eight again…'.

It CAN'T be still in progress, can it?

give us the full electric version!
  4. Well, the songs evolve and change through their forming proccess... The Every Breaking Wave they had "almost ready" for NLOTH may have changed a lot (in lyrics, key, structure, durm pattern, tempo, etc etc) up to now, and that might be why they aren't sure yet.
There's also their inherent laziness though
  5. I think it's that "inherent laziness" that pisses me off.....

maybe I'm getting to old to forgive them any longer.
  6. Before releasing NLOTH, EBW was on that tracklisting and some journalists heard it. I'm not sure if this is from Rolling Stone, but after listening, they worote for EBW: A swelling soul-pop song, with bright synth sounds influenced by OMD and, Bono says, "early electronica." "You don't hear indie bands doing blue-eyed soul [like this]," he adds.

Exactly! that is wat I meant.
The recording was in the can! I'm dying to hear that one...

I listened to it several times last night and I like it. It's far from finished but in this pure and raw body I already get a good feeling with it. About whether it is unfinished or not, you can hear Bono saying to Edge at the very end: 'You got the melody wrong there'.
  9. Of course it's unfinished, no doubt about that. But it has had a good start and has potential - both things are neccesary to grow and become a good song.

No, it's more that the U2.com writers suck and don't know their U2.

Cos in those quotes from NLOTH mag previews I posted earlier, it's clearly not a work in progress - it was only left off due to length. AND they also give the "every sailor knows that the sea etc" line so it clearly hasn't changed all that much in the 1.5-2 years since.
  11. Well, did you hear the complete version in 2008? If so, I'd gladly eat my hat (and my words).
Reviews and comments in magazines are not the absolute truth (specially when it comes to U2, and specially when it comes to unreleased stuff).

    Yep, I like that idea

I've finally heard EBW; just the once. I like it. Hit me more immediately than Glastonbury ot North Star. I do see some similarity between North Star and EBW at present, as Yeah has said. Maybe that's due to the acoustic work in progress, balls it up towards the end thing?!

I love that they're taking these risks on stage with brand new songs. It's like what they used to do with impromptu performances of WGRYWH, Spanish Eyes etc. Good stuff.
